Kiwis Shatter World Record

Earthrace, the world's fastest eco-boat, has just beaten the world speed record for a powerboat to circumnavigate the globe, completing the 24000km journey in 60 days, 23 hours and 49 minutes. This meant that the old world record was beaten by 13 days, 21 hours and 9 minutes.

The boat crossed the finish line in Sagunto at 14:24 hours CET today, and completed the journey using 100% biofuel to demonstrate and draw global attention to the potential for alternative fuel sources.

Earthrace is a 24m tri-hull wavepiercer built in New Zealand, and the record attempt, run by a team of international volunteers from New Zealand, UK, Sweden, Guyana and Hungary, has been completed as a carbon neutral project.

The previous record was set in 1998 by the British boat, Cable and Wireless Adventurer. The finish in Spain by Earthrace was monitored by D. Jaime Pérez López, Presidente de la Federación Territorial Motonaútica de la Comunidad Valenciana. Earthrace will now be docked at Marina Real Juan Carlos in Valencia for a few days to allow supporters and the public to go on board and meet the crew.

It's amazing how the underwhelming news within NZ just hasn't been reported, the last small newsclip which you have to search for in the national newspaper was on the 17th June, it was then reported briefly that Earthrace has encountered heavy seas which had slowed it between India and the Arabian Peninsula (Aden).

Today, Saturday's Herald has no news whatsoever on this race.

That is amazing Tbirdnz because that is a really spectacular achievement, once again from such a small country.

..... once again - thanks for letting us know how our boat is going Wombat.

As tbird says the news coverage of it here has been disappointing - I think I have heard very brief updates only twice in the last couple of weeks.

The best way is to keep an eye on their website

http://www.earthrace.net/

I just checked the website and it says they still have 79km to go! - probably too busy celebrating to update it

Where did you get your information from Wombat?

Grant,
That text came from a boating website, but I sat up until 03.00 am in a Yahoo conference with a bunch of other Earthrace supporters, watching the Tracplus tracker until they were in port.

Certainly an amazing achievement by all concerned and I am looking forward to meeting Pete Bethune when they visit Hawaii in November.

Yeah the mongrels!

They did an last minute diversion from Maui to Oahu while I was on the ferry on my way to Maui.

They came up with some lame excuse about refueling.

I am sure they did it on purpose because I am an Aussie
