digital camera near magnets
will putting my digital camera in my magnetic tank bag have any diverse affects?
the magnets seem quite strong and the manufacturer (givi) warns against putting bank cards in it.
going to a bike night tonight at an old air force camp with a running lancaster, so want some pics.
cheers

It shouldn't be a problem unless your camera has a hard drive in it (do any digital cameras have hard drives yet? Some video cameras do I think). If it does have a hard drive you need to keep it away from those.
Otherwise - I don't see why it would be a problem. Wrap it up so as to keep it as far away (towards the top of the bag) from the magnets as possible for peace of mind - Magnetic fields drop off rapidly over a distance, so keeping things further away will reduce the effect.
I'd like to see pics of the Lanc - I assume it's the BoB memorial flight lanc?
Cheers

I expect prop' is right. In my work, I used my digital camera around very powerful electromagnets without ill effect. It uses an SD memory disk instead of magnetic recording media.
Some older cameras used floppy disks, and there may be justification for some pro cameras to use HDDs due to file sizes; but given the power requirements of either floppy or hard drives, most consumer cameras use memory cards instead these days. These could be susceptible to electromagnetic pulse effects or powerful radio waves in extreme cases, but ordinary magnetic fields ought not bother most digital cameras.

...better a magnet than high-speed pavement...

My digital camera, Sony, can capture video as well as stills. I've had it in my magnetic tankbag with no ill effects. It has also been through numerous airport security "devices" with no problems too.

If you're shooting in a highly magnetic condition, your pictures might have issues IF you have an "IS" feature like some Canon cameras have. Otherwise, you'll be fine.
The "IS" system uses magnets to stabilize the lens...

I was worried about this too, but my samsung camera has had no problems in my magnetic tank bag even after a week touring.

You'd have to be shooting next to some very powerful magnets to see any adverse effects as a result of their magnetic properties...
That being said, if you're concerned, just buy a non "IS" camera and call it a day...
