The story is probably true but no report in any of the NZ papers todate, maybe that's because it had been announced by a government minister so that's bound to be bulldust for a start.

NZ farmers say cows only return methane and don't originate it, the rotting vegetation would produce it if it wasn't eaten.

...but we are looking to Australia for an answer:

From the News report:

Cows and sheep release vast quantities of methane through belching and flatulence, but kangaroos release virtually none.

Unlike me after eating a good meal of roo.

The fact is that the reporters reading this stuff are so illiterate they can't get it right at all. Further, the Earth has gone through many periods of warming and cooling and this may just be part of the cycle. They never seem to mention the fact that when Mt. St. Helens blew the global temp was reduced for quite awhile....and, that was just one volcano.

I read Algore's book, "Earth in the Balance", very well written crap. It was amazing how little he got right or what a slanted picture he painted. Most of these people are like PITA, who care less for animals than they do their own political agenda.

I wish more people like you were shouting this from the roof tops. Global warming / Climate change is not about science and is actually more about Socialism than any supporter will admit. We almost had a "global warming" economic disaster cause by power-hungry politicians in the form of the the Cap and Trade bill. Luckily, it just got shot down in the US Senate and should be dead for this year.

Unfortunately, seldom do calm and level-headed people get noticed over the din of idiocy!!

Seriously, I think that most of this will blow over soon. When people begin to notice the cost of all of this the representatives will begin to feel the heat. I think the real problem is the fact that so few people, at least in the US, are scientifically literate that any thing in the newspaper "must be true" and God forbid it be on TV....then "it IS true". And, this is the kind of thing conspiracy theorist just love.

Notice how many people, even after the thorough investigation by a ballistics expert, still want to believe in the "grassy knoll". That movie JFK did more to make people stupid than nearly any other film. There are even those who believe the moon shots were faked.....geez. And, they can't be persuaded otherwise. Look at how many people are convinced that UFOs are making constant landings, without any consideration for the concept of Relativity......on and on it goes.

I read Scientific American's website daily. Along with many other publications. I find it amazing that so few of us are "up to speed" on current scientific knowledge. Many of my students actually think that every thing they'll ever need to know is either on TV or the internet......and, their parents agree!!

Ah yes, they have a different opinion, so they must be mocked.
