Flying Wing
Indeed - the Germans pioneered many concepts in aviation, but the flying wing in raiders of the lost ark is not close to any of the designs tried out. Nice pic of the wing by the way.
But it doesn't matter - because the movie was so much fun, and just hinted at stuff that sort of existed.
Which I think is the point. Rather than try and be really historically accurate vehicle wise, on a fictional film, Spielberg just puts vehicles in place that more or less suit the purpose at the time.
I think that the tank in Last Crusade, for example, while sort of looking a bit like a lot of world war I tanks, is actually a work of fiction.
Right, I'm starting to look a bit too geeky here.
To the motorcycles!

Well we're going to see it tonight so I'll have a better look and I know I'll watch through the whole film looking for little oversights.

going to take the kids in the next few days as I am a big fan of the Indy series and my oldest son is 8 and really getting into them.
PS look at the harley tires. They are modern day tires which would not of existed in the 40s.....

You mean "The Motorcycle Diaries"? It's already been made! Great film! It wasn't a Harley though, it was a Norton.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0318462/
The motorcycle used by the real life pair was a British-made Norton International, which had a 500cc single cylinder engine. The director revealed that they found, restored and used such Nortons except for the crash scenes where modern Suzukis were made up to look like Nortons and christened "Nortsukis". The director revealed that whereas the old Nortons were unfailingly reliable, the modern Suzukis were forever breaking down.

So we saw it last night. It was a fun flick. There were more than a few moments of impossible to believe moments in the movie involving waterfalls and such but we had a good time.
$13.50 though. Ouch! For two of us to see the film, get some snacks (just popcorn and a soda) it was over $40. And we had free parking that night or it would have been $6-10 more. Netflix baby!

The bike has a plastic master cylinder, and electric start..20 years too early...
but in on scene where there were bikes parked, there were clearly at least 2 indians and 1 powder blue 50's triumph...even my wife recognized them...

Meh... I spend $11 per ticket here in CA, then popcorn, candy, soda's... I typically spend $50-60 bucks on any given movie.

There's a vintage Triumph cameo. It's parked next to the HD, outside the burger joint, where they get into a fight.

The movie was set in 1957.

That would be pretty funny if anyone actually spotted the vintage bikes with Pilot Power 2CTs on them. I didn't think to look at the tread patterns but that would have taken away from just enjoying the movie.

I didn't have any trouble with them tarting up a modern HD to look like an old one. Seems perfectly appropriate for the brand to me.
I did scratch my head pretty hard about the gunpowder and lead responding to magnetic fields though. And how did they reinforce the kitchen floors to support lead refrigerators?
We paid $28.50 for four tickets. Very entertaining movie. Now we have a real trilogy of Raiders movies (the less said about #2, the better).
