Helmet Chin Fastener
Clip systems are apparently not DOT approved systems ... if it is coming undone, that is extremely dangerous
Someone also told me over the weekend that clip systems are apparently illegal in certain parts of Europe. Can someone please confirm this.
Maybe I must go back to the ring fastener system

I'd also like to know if they are illegal / not DOT approved in California.
Your knowledge is appreciated, as I've been interested in converting my helmet.

Not sure about illegal but I had a clip system on one of my helmets which is an Italian brand and that did come undone only when trying to fasten it, once it was fastened it stayed connected. It was/is a Dot approved helmet.

Unless you have finger problems why complicate something that is already simple and functional?

FYI- My Nolan N102 came DOT approved w/ a clip/quick release system. I like the system. Maybe the rules and regs depend on the type of fastener?

clip fasteners
It depends on the clip = Generalizing all clips not being DOT approved, is B.S.
I know of at least 4 or more makes that are DOT approved. And with a little research, could find lots more.

As GJB so rightly points out, the Nolan N102, which I also own, does have a clip system and IS DOT approved.
It is interesting to note that clips systems are not legal in Australia and all Nolan N102s sold in Australia have d-rings.

I know this is vague, but I recall hearing something on NPR about a US lawsuit against "an Italian helmet maker" for the clip coming undone and the helmet coming off, and subsequent injuries.
It was in the context of a story about how foreign (non-US) courts refuse to enforce punitive damages from US lawsuits, only actual damages are enforced. This is because they don't have punitive damages, they rely more on the regulatory process than civil suits.
I figure the company was probably Nolan.
