Do you talk to your neighbours ?

One lady's neighbours in Croatia never did, or at least she never spoke to them, but she had a good reason not to.

When they eventually broke into her flat, seemingly to take it over, they discovered she had been dead for 35 years !

I fear that this is all too common, if not the death going unnoticed then at least neighbors who are seemingly distant and disinterested. It's probably not intentional for the most part but just a natural result of our long working days and "personal entertainment" that doesn't require interaction with actual live people. This is called social progress.

OK you can all have a laugh on my account....

A few years ago I attacked my overgrown garden (it's just a small townhouse garden) & then developed it into a tidy, proper garden. Not only did I enjoy the experience but various neighbours started talking to me, offered encouragement, gave me plants and it lead to dialogue & even friendship . It's great. Yes we can still behave like normal people even in the suburbs. It takes either a bit of effort, or a specific incident, to start the conversation.

My wife and I moved into a new, suburban subdivision about 4 years ago. Our new neighbor decided upon his own to have a tall ugly fence installed totally around his property. Note that no one else had a fence at this time.

Upon completion, he then went around pounding on all the adjoining property neighbors doors DEMANDING that they (including us) pay 1/2 the price of the fence, since they were "using it".

All of us had the same simple answer for the unfortunate individual, not printable here. He has held an ongoing, assumingly lifetime grudge against all of us ever since. We seldom talk.

On the other sides, we have absolutely wonderful neighbors and talk and socialize regularly.

There is a parable here somewhere.

I never used to speak to my neighbours much - not because we didn't get on, we just didn't happen to see each other much.

Then someone organized a street party, and they discovered I keep draft Summit extra pale ale on tap in my kitchen at all times, plus one fridge devoted to bottled beer, a wine cellar, and thirty bottles of single malt scotch.

Nowadays we're as social as you like.

Funny that.

I know all my neighbors for 6 or 7 houses in both directions. My wife and across the street neighbor have organized and held a block party for 5 years now. One of the things we have gotten out of it is a map and list of all our neighbors for the entire block. I like meeting the little old ladies and the new young couples on our block. I feel very fortunate to have such great neighbore, I love South Austin!

Our neighborhood is really friendly.
Most of us know each other quite well, help each other out.....just a good old-fashioned lifestyle.

Not if I can help it. When I moved in I told them all that they seemed nice (except the whore next door) and that I would call 911 if their house wa on fire, but, i wasn't going to come over and ask to borrow anything and that i would appreciate the same courtesy from them. I don't want any new friends and my home is where i go to get away from people.

When can I come over

Propforward,
I like my scotch "three fingers", when should I stop by?

I love my neighbors they're a crazy bunch. People come an go but I feel safe when I can see through my two neighbors houses to the next. It takes all kinds to make it work.
I love the stuff they toss in the trash. Air compressor, two gas lawn mowers, furniture, floor dolly, hoses, lawn ornaments, air conditioners, hell its a commune.
