Skyline Drive/Blue Ridge Pky
Some say don't plan to drive the entire length. But imagine how much better your riding would become if you did. If I get sick of the twisties, I can always cut over to I-81 right? Has anyone done the whole 500 miles without thinking, "I've had about enough of this"? Or was it one of the most unforgetable rides ever?

I wish I had the time to do the length of Skyline Dr, I know it would be a blast.

I did the BRP from end to end without getting sick of it. This year I plan on doing the BRP and Skyline on my way to the BASH in BENNINGTON. So I guess since I'm doing it again I would have to say, do it, you will love it.

I've ridden the entire length of both Skyline Drive and the Blue Ridge Parkway once a year for the last 12 years. One year I did the whole thing in the rain. It's been a spring ritual for me. This year I leave on June 8, a late start.
Usually I ride from Florida to Baltimore to pick up a friend and then we start at Front Royal and ride to Cherokee. It's a very low key ride that usually takes 2.5 days. We stop a lot and take our time.
Don't go on the weekends. I always ride the BRP and Skyline Drive in the middle of the week when there is NO traffic. When I leave the BRP to get gas or find a motel, the first thing that gets my attention is how annoying all the traffic is. As an aside, don't ride I-81 there is way too much traffic and way too many trucks. It totally sucks.
Here's a photo collage from the 2005 BRP ride. Back then I rode a BMW R1150RT , but it was still a fun ride!

Well, I've done almost all of Skyline Drive and the BRP - missed the last 60 miles South of Asheville, NC, which I regret because I tend to be a completist. But that was more due to poor ride planning than not wanting to do it.
That said, it's a totally great ride worth doing, depsite what some people say about speed limits and traffic. I never had a problem with traffic - but you really should try to do it mid-week - not on the weekend.
As long as you are not expecting to drag knees for 500 miles it's a fantastic cruise. That said, it can lull you into a false sense of security and just as quickly bite you in the ass. When I was there last May, I came up on three guys in the road on touring Harleys, one who obviously lost it on a turn. Nothing serious, but it could have been. You need to stay focused which can wear on you. Definitely a full two day ride.
I nominate this road a... "Motorcycle Must Do".

couldn't agree more, but then I don't care for any super slabs and the BRP/Skyline aren't the Dragons tail. You can relax and learn a little American history along the way

I'm thinking I'd like to ride Skyline this year. Yup, down to Charlottesville and back, two days.
Now all I need is the time, the money, the weather, and the energy all at once.
Maybe I'll just ride to Quizno's for a sandwich instead.

I've ridden the entire length, end to end in one day in 1976 (5:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.) on a Thursday. Only saw one ranger all day, was able to cruse at 70 most of the time, light to no traffic. You couldn't do that today, what with traffic and radar patrolling rangers every 50 miles or less.
I've also ridden the entire length two other times broken up into two days each. It's the best road for getting away from all the hustle and bustle of city traffic, tractor trailers, stop lights... just take a deep breath and chill while cruising through some of the most beautiful country and on some of the smoothest asphalt in the U.S. If you're in a hurry take the highway. It's a definite must do on any motorcyclist's list. Every time I spend any time on the parkway I hate to get off and have to deal with traffic again. Why can't all roads be like this?
I'm already planning a trip up there for next month.

That sign looks familiar but I just can't quite place it.
Maybe it's because you are on the wrong side?
