Lay off time

I am not sure how you "Winter period, snow, below freezing" guys do it.

After reading a recent thread about the Alaskan rider getting out in freezing conditions it made me think. :
How do you guys get through the long, long, long break of winter?

I haven't been able to get out today - really gusty ****ty weather - and am getting a little cabin fever. Mind you I did go for a 2 hour run with my wife on Friday. But I am missing riding even now and it has only been 2 days.

I will be commuting to work on Monday so there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Good question Steve, I wouldn't like being forced not to ride for any length of time.

I got out today for a 270km mixed fwy/twisty ride:Sunday Ride

Yeah, Winter sux!
I have to wear a jumper underneath my jacket, for my morning ride up the mountain.

Since I moved to the northeastern US from the southeast, I've gone from riding 11 months per year to between 7 - 8. It's agonizing.

The downtime is spent planning rides, polishing bikes, replacing worn gear. I think I mentioned in another post, my wife's amusement with me walking around the house in freezing February with my new Alpinestar boots - gotta break 'em in, right? I replaced the face shield on my helmet, got some new knee armor and saddle soaped the leather.

I spent a lot of time looking at maps, looking at weather.com and sighing.

Decent weather is still eluding us at this stage. I went out in cloudy conditions yesterday and returned in a thunderstorm. At least I got a couple hundred miles in before doing my drowned rat riff when I walked in the door.

Bikes are good to go - new rubber, fresh oil. The only thing holding me back is the rotten weather. When it finally breaks, I will hit the road with a vengeance. Until then, I'll just whine on the triumphrat forum!

How does one survive the winter break?

The answer is the three Ms: maintenance, modifications, and insane impatience.

I'm with the general consensus... this winter I did: Handlebars w/ bar-end mirrors, chrome lever kit, saddle bags, chain oiler, oil change and lots of detailing. To tell you the truth, I can barely find time to clean the thing when it's riding season!

Alaska in untouched powder snow out in the country would be a dream to ride in, it's the black ice and slush that makes it dangerous in the cities and highways.

Here in the north of the North Island of NZ winter just means more clothing.

Ride on !
