Janklow!
There were many strange machinations in this case - resulting in this. It's all over now though, excepting the memories and the lessons learned.

Some may have followed this story over the years, it's been a topic here before - now it's done.

I suppose that's something, but I still wish they guy had been hit with a negligent homicide charge. He should have spent several years in jail at least.

A certain privilege was applied and responsibility was adopted by the Federal government for his actions - they settled, essentially saying it was their fault as he was on 'Official business' when he ran the red light - what a crock, we as Tax payers paid this. Subsequent to his jail time "Janklow was given a suspended imposition of sentence, his criminal record was cleared". Justice for all! I just hope that this A-hole never gets to run for public office ever again - chances are he will though!

No offense, but why would it matter if he was on "official" business or not? Are you telling me that they would have asked for less money if he was just out joyriding after work and accidentally ran the stop sign, but because he is a government employee on "official" business, that's a license to "stick it to the man" and try to get more money from said government?! It was the governments fault that he didn't eat anything that morning and may have blacked out while driving? Nope, just his own carelessness. And if it really bothered them why did they settle? Cause they weren't going to get anywhere over the 1 million mark if it went to court and it would have dragged on for quite a while. But since the gov't was willing to give them 1 million to shut up and leave them alone, it's ok.
p.s. I wonder if state taxes are going to go up?!

Which ever way you look at it, it's pitiful. I feel for the family.

It's a tragedy and a big family loss but I can't help feeling if it had been just an ordinary guy with the car that ran the light, he did say he was a diabetic and could have blacked out at that stage or loss of concentration, then there would not have been such a big issue made.
These things happen all the time, this one gets the publicity for who the driver was and a feeling he's going to get off because of it. In the aftermath they were both victims.

Ride on !

$1 million bucks is not a lot of equal compensation for a guy rubbed out at 55 years old. He still had a long way to go in life, and a lot more riding to do.
Condolences of course to the family and friends.
If you are a big-shot in the government, you never need to worry about taking responsibility for your actions. Taxpayers $$ will get you off with a light handslap, then you get to go to summer camp, again at the taxpayers expense.

I seem to remember that this guy had a history of regarding his election as a license to drive however the %^&) he felt like. This was only the worst in a long history of flaunted traffic laws on his part. He deserved all the extra publicity and more. Elected officials, especially those with national reach, should be held to higher standards of conduct that some 'ordinary guy.'
