Protocol

Is there a protocol to calling dibs on a a part?
Or do the mods here just delete a thread with no explanation?

I belong to another forum for old bikes and it is SUGGESTED to call dibs
or I want this so we don't outbid each other.

Is this some British protocol or am I missing something?

And if a mod does decide to delete this post also, could I have
and explanantion?

Thanks

In this world wide market place and for parts that are relatively scarce as a lot of Triumph parts are, calling 'dibs' does not mean a thing.

By posting the auction details to an active forum such as this, you are only drawing more attention to it and can only expect more people to possibly bid on the item.

If someone sees something on ebay and they want it bad enough, they are not going to give a rats rectum that you want it too.

Who's to say that a number of people from this forum had not already had the item in their 'watch list'.

Do you REALLY think that they would care that you 'called dibs'?

I wouldn't.

I agree with Wombat, it's not like we are eight here and can call dibs on items. I used to lick all items so my little brother couldn't have them, maybe this can be done to that item?

I believe life as we knew it started to go bad here in the good ol' USA, when you couldn't call "first dibs" on something, let alone "second dibs".

We're all entitled to our opinion here 97Sprint but are not so rude about it. Collusion at auctions is similar to insider trading, a bit despicable.

A tip, if you bid for a item on e-bay then don't advertise it to 15,000 other members on a bike site not to mention the 100,000 lurkers.

We used to do this on a model-specific mailing list I was on. But that was a much smaller group of people. I don't think it would work here. Best to try and fly under the radar, and avoid attracting the attention of people who will jump to anatomic references at the drop of a phalanx.

Sorry you're having a hard time accepting honesty from fellow rats. At least where/when I grew up, calling "dibs" stopped around 5th grade. If someone is outbidding you on a part, they must want the part and are perfectly welcome to pay what they feel is fair even if it's more than you want to pay. If someone is "faking" just to drive the bid up well then that is their shame. If you really want an item that badly, use the "buy it now" feature when available. Life ain't fair bro. Never was nor will be. Sorry.
