Depending on what he used to ride, I'd suggest a used Bonnie to see if he really still has the fever. I bought a refurbished Seca 750 after a 20 year riding break and rode it for about 3 years. My last bike before that was a H1 500 so the Seca wasn't a big stretch as far as power & performance.
Then I got my beloved Tiger....

If he likes the Street Triple, why doesn't he order one? & then buy a decent 2nd hand bike to fill in the wait, which he could use as a trade-in on the Street.
My choice would probably be a used Bonnie or Ducati Monster. Though I'd be more driven by the bike's condition, price & potential trade-in value, than a specific model, as it wouldn't be the bike I'd be planning on keeping.
