Namedropping
Not wishing to hijack Whisperin's thread about celebrities, on a slightly different angle, who has had an encounter with a real "celebrity"? Quite often someone was "in the lift once and you'll never guess but J-Lo got in".. or something etc etc.. an encounter that you'll remember even if they won't..
I suppose I should start. I once had lunch with Eric Clapton. We talked guitars, the girls (my then girlfriend and Patti Boyd) talked sixties fashion. That was pretty cool.
Go on, namedrop... you know you want to!

I was actually trying to hijack whisper's thread. Thought it needed an infusion of fresh blood.
Okay since I used the Barbara mandrell story over there I guess I will go with Bruce Dern and James Taylor over here.
James Taylor was not that big of a deal. I sold him 2 humidifiers and didn't even realize it was him until the customer behind asked if that was James Taylor after James had walked away. I looked at the receipt again and said yep it was.
Worked in retail. Bruce Dern was making a movie in town. He came in the place I worked one fairly warm day wearing a full length parka. I immeadiately assumed he was a shoplifter and did what I was taught. Went right over and asked if he needed some help. The second he opened his mouth his voice gave him away.

Does drunk count?
I've been hammered with the likes of the Dropkick Murphys and The Rev. Horton Heat, and The Hudson Falcons, and The Kings of Nuthin on numerous occasions. Anybody who has heard of them thinks these bands are famous. And when I was 23 I got to drink with David Allen Coe. I see a pattern here...

My girlfriend is a local public radio announcer, for what that is worth. Other than an occasional handshake with politicians, that's all I can claim.

Although not famous myself, I have worked with quite a few famous people. I was a professional musician for about 25 years and played with some great folks. I even played on stage with Steve Miller one night. Still play music part time now but continue to be fortunate enough to share the stage with a legend now and again.

I was in the entertainment business for most of my adult life, before I got a real job in technology. As a radio dj, I met some of the biggest names in country music and a lot who thought they were big. In case you're wondering, the really big ones don't act like they're "all that and a bag of chips." The wannabes are the ones behaving like prima donnas. Merle Haggard is one of the coolest guys I ever met. Jerry Lee Lewis is another.
As a guitarist, prior to my radio daze, I had a 10 minute conversation with Jimmy Page in the lobby of the Peachtree Hotel in Atlanta. On a separate occasion, I spoke for about the same length of time with J.J. Cale at the Roxy in DC. One night I got Johnny Winter to sign my power bill. It was the only paper my girlfriend had in her purse. Johnny looked at it and said "You better pay this bill, boy!"
Lunch with Clapton though, that's hard to top!

Worked backstage security at the Grand Ole Opry and Fan Fare for a couple years in the early-mid 90s. Met just about anyone in the country music biz during that time.
Now-a-days I'll bump into an occassional celeb from time to time (nature of the job). Met and chatted with Herschel Walker about bikes (he rides a M109 Suzuki) last year at a local HS football game. A buddy I use to work with is good friends with a popular pitcher from the Atlanta Braves. We get invites to use his Luxury Suite when the Braves are in town.
edit: BTW Lovel, I use to work for Barbara Mandrell when I was just out of HS (mid 80s).

During the glory days of the San Francisco 49ers, I once found myself at a bar sitting next to Joe Montana, Roger Craig, and the late Bill Walsh. No big deal, I say to myself and chanel the inner Fonz. Be cool, they're just guys out for a drink. Then, this blonde comes over and gushes all over them and they're real responsive and gracious. They exchange pleasantries for a while till the starstruck blonde leaves. At this point, I think they must be comfortable with being approached and since I'm sitting at the barstool next to Joe Freakin Montana I may as well take advantage of the opportunity to say hello. So I look over to Bill Walsh and say "Good afternoon, Coach Walsh, how are you?" All three of them look over at me for a few painful seconds, then turn away. Nothin'. Not a nod, a hello, or a what's up. To make matters worse, I get up later to visit the Men's Room and there at a urinal is Roger Craig, who I just ignore at this point until I realize he's taking a leak while standing about three feet away from the bloody urinal! Who stands 3 feet away except someone who thinks much to highly of himself. Go Raiders.
