Please help; spilled gas in helmet

My friend was in from out of town. I let him ride my Sprint ST, and I took out my brother's Aprilia Caponord.

We were getting gas, and as it turns out, the Aprilia's gas tank is VERY different from the Sprint. I usually just barely stick the nozzle in the Sprint, so I can see when it's full. Well the Aprilia has a dang black flap that you have to push the nozzle through to fill up. Didn't see the flap, so gas splashed up all over me, with my visor up (had sunglasses on). It is truly amazing how much gas comes out of those things in just a split second.

So anyway, DO NOT EVER DO THIS. It was ugly. Everything is back to normal now, except for the gas smell in my helmet. It's a Shoei TZ-R, so no removable chin pads. Smell is driving me crazy. This happened on Sunday, and the smell was still in my helmet this morning.

Is there any trick to getting the gas smell out?

A match ought to work! At least it will change the smell.

helmet

to clean the inside of my helmet, I use a washcloth with warm soapy water. just press it around in the liner, let it soak a while and then rinse with a wet washcloth, pressing it agains the liner. if you scrub, or rub hard, the cloth inner liner can seperate from the foam inside. let air dry and the smell should go away. might have to do it again or not.
good luck

I shouldn't ride around with the visor closed till the smell goes or the world might go a bit wobberly

And now for something completely different

Someone suggests using cotton balls dipped in pure vanilla extract. Let the cotton swabs sit on the cheek pads for about an hour.
Other folks say vinegar is good for removing gas odor from cloth.

Sorry, but you should throw the helmet away. The gas is probably attacking the crushable foam. At the very least, contact the manufacturer before you use the helmet again. No kidding!!! If you smell gas in the helmet, the helmet is probably melting away.

Good Luck

This thread gave me a chuckle to start with but the last post that recommended douching the helmet was downright hilarious. Now that's funny ah don't care who you are. I second the febreze as I use it in the summer to get the sweat smell out of the full face in the summer heat.

This is 100% true! The foam inside of motorcycle helmets can be dissolved by gasoline. You might have ruined the helmet...

Petrol (gas to you fellas) will also harden and cause visors to crack or shatter. I'd pull back some of the lining within the helmet to inspect the foam, but my guess would also be that the petrol has dissolved and polystyrene between the lining and the shell.
