is a valid check.

I was in the banking business for quite a few years and had heard these rumors before. The legend of the farmer writing his check on a pig or the like is almost certainly a myth but the legality question would not be about the validity of the check as it would be about public health and safety of delivering a live animal to a processing office or something along that line. A bank can reject your paper napkin check but you can apparently insist that they honor it if all of the required info is there. You would certainly not be a highly respected customer at that point. There are accepted standards of check sizes and printing formats that ensure uniform processing for all financial institutions but it doesn't seem to be law. Of course the wisdom of such an act would be questionable at best since you could be questioned for potential offenses like check fraud or postal violations. Most likely the majority of these stories are indeed nothing more than urban legends but what if...?
