I feel your pain. I thought I would finally get some riding in this month. I have been busy, busy the last couple of months. Now that things have quieted down, it has been 102-109° every day for at least the last week ! ...J.D.
I so hate doing stupid things. I mailed my helmet to Arai from Savannah...my new home. When Arai sent it back to me, I assumed they'd use the return address on the box I sent them.
I was wrong. They sent it to my address in their records...which was in Mobile, AL. And it did arrive there today. My daughter in law sent me a picture to prove it.
All is not lost however. I lived with my son in Mobile for two months while I was looking for a job. Found the job. Now I'm in Savannah. The bad news...I don't have my helmet. The good news...my son does! So I should have it by the weekend.
I love the helmet. First and foremost...it fits my round melon perfectly. Of course, I've had three years and 49,000 miles, to mold it to my head. That may be part of the problem. Even though the warranty was for five years, I'll bet not many riders put the helmets through their paces like this has been.
In any case, some of the plastic bits had begun to malfunction and crack.
My left, upper air vent used to click on and click off. And now it doesn't. It's just a mushy maybe it's in, maybe it's off feeling and I can't tell if it works or not.
My chin vent trim piece cracked in two. That made the chin vent malfunction. My nose/breath guard inside the helmet dried out and cracked...said crack and resulting sharp edges thereof landing smack on the bridge of my nose.
The pull down chin air dam/guard malfunctioned and detached.
I can tell from the picture that the chin vent trim piece had been replaced, as has the nose/breath guard.
It'll be like having a new helmet already broken in! Luckily I had all the information (thanks RevZilla) to prove when, where, and for how much I bought it.
Flyfisher, I too had good service from Arai. They made a bunch of repairs on my helmet and they replaced some things I didn't expect. They replaced worn cheek pads and the face shield. They replaced some of the other plastic parts that had broken too like I expected. I got more than I asked for from them. The helmet was about 4 years old and had about 60K miles on it.
Also, like you, I like the fit and that it is quiet. Plus the air vents actually work.
My pull down wind guard separated from the helmet. I just glued back in with construction adhesive. One of the vents also stopped clicking, just flopped around. Did nothing about that. What about shipping to Arai. Do they pay both ways for warranty work?
I got the RX-Q last time for my big head. I think RevZilla, and others (like my local Triumph dealer) have some left over, but Arai doesn't make them any more.
They replaced the RX-Q head shape with the Quantum X. RevZilla had a good video on the new improvements, and there are a lot of them....most notably that the Quantum X is quieter. One quick point: if you look at the photo of mine above, you can see the vent openings in the top of the helmet. Even when the vent is closed, the little vent scoop is still open to the airflow and that causes noise.
I've held a Quantum X in my hands and it's obvious that Arai has addressed all of the exposed openings and beefed up the plastic bit vents and controls. It's supposed to be much quieter....all detailed in the RevZilla video.
These same new features are also included in one of the helmets sized for narrower heads than mine.
I love my Arai. If I wear this one out, I'll have this one next.
It's here. Arai did a good job. Every plastic bit that was broken us now working again.
