Anyone mess with travel insurance when riding in another country?
I haven't before, but I started thinking about what would be covered if I wrecked up in Canada? What if I needed to be choppered to a hospital ... they are few and far between up in lots of Ontario. What if they needed to pick me up off the beaten path, down a logging road or something?
For a six day trip World Nomads would charge me $50 for $100,000 of emergency medical coverage and $300,000 of emergency evacuation. The evacuation thing is getting you home from a remote hospital, and medevacing you from an accident. Not search and rescue.
I have pretty good health insurance through work, so I suppose I just need to give them a call and see what they cover in that situation.
Given the shortcomings of American health insurance, I buy travel health insurance now whenever I travel outside the US. My health insurance is good, but I'm not going to push my luck trying to make a claim for treatment that takes place in another country.
Travel health insurance is not expensive, and includes services such medical evacuation back to the US if necessary, dead body repatriation, travel for a family member to assist, and so on. It also offers a kind of telephone concierge service to guide you with the process if it comes to that. You're not left footing the bill and trying to figure out how to claim it later, or so they say.
Having said that, I've never actually had to use the insurance, so I can't speak from experience, except experience buying it and reading the directions and coverage.
Avoid the come-ons to insure your travel itself in case you have to bail out. The acceptable reasons to get a refund are strict, and the insurance is expensive. If you can't afford to self-insure your trip against yourself cancelling it, you can't afford to consider going at all; you've already committed to spending the money so it shouldn't be an issue, financially.

Yeah, I agree. I keep reading about travelguard.com but that seems very focused on recouping plane ticket/cruise fees if you cancel. Can't seem to even get a quote unless I give the upfront and final costs of the trip. Not what I'm looking for, just don't want to be bankrupted from medical expenses if I dump the bike badly off the beaten track.
I have purchased MedJetAssist over the years especially while traveling out of the country solo or with my children. I never had the need to use it but I looked at that as a good thing. I know of people who have had to use it when I was in some fairly remote areas and it works.
I also know of some adventure riders who purchase MedJetAssist when taking extensive trips out of the country in particular Mexico, Central, and South America. For those who had the occasion to need it while in those areas it worked as advertised.
Sounds like medjetassist will get you from a international hospital to your favorite hospital at home, even if not medically necessary. But, it doesn't seem to cover getting to that international hospital, or costs at that international hospital. I think I'm looking for that coverage as well.
I did learn that search and rescue is free, or rather considered a government service, in both the US and Canada, so I don't need coverage for that it seems.
With insurance offerings I wouldn't even trust my shadow. I'd want to know if the policy is accepted for payment in Canadian hospitals and clinics.
