Australia - our extremes

Some of the forum members from "the other side of the pond" have asked me on occasion what Australia is like.

Our national anthem speaks of extremes, of droughts and flooding rains.

I dabble in cattle and recently had to sell off my entire herd (including my bull) because of the extended drought (2 years of hand feeding) , the cost of hay (from $2.50 up to $15) and the likelyhood that the next year would be similar.

We went from this..

to this....

in just 6 months!!

Hay is back to $2.50 and yes, that is a black cow in the middle of the paddock!! We are about to buy another 15 cattle in order to restock and recoup..

I really love Australia but I cannot imagine how the "real" farmers make a crust.. My thoughts go out to them and their daily struggle.

It could get back to being a dust bowl within 6 months too (this being Oz). Though a wet Winter, which seems quite likely, would be truly drought breaking.
The City needs it too. Brisbane's dams only reached 40% capacity after all that Summer rain (up from a low of 15%). & they're already back down to 35%.
So more rain is definitely needed.

Good luck with your cattle. It sure looks like you've plenty of good feed to fatten them.
How many head to the acre can you run?

We decided to run Lowlines this time.

http://www.walker-texas-ranch.com/in...es/Page716.htm

More boutique so as to maximise our resale value.. We only have 28 acres and plan to run about 10 cattle with a bull and on sell the ones that we don't want.

The larger cattle eat HEAPS.

We have also just bought 400 bails of hay to see us through and sell some during the winter (hopefully) for a profit.

With a little more pasture available than OZ our rule of thumb is one head of cattle per acre depending on the age spread. You can basically double the number for weaners but by the time they are yearlings you need to stick to the one for one. In winter it's best to run the numbers down otherwise you'll be feeding out a lot of hay.

My philosophy this year is to totally run down the number of head to zero in the winter, as long as they are bringing in $1.56/kg, the same price as 5 years ago, and the recoup cost is $2.00/kg then I will refuse to subsidise the supermarkets who price out steak at $22.00 +/kg and control the auction prices to less than recovery costs.

I've stopped breeding them and haven't bought any for 2 years, when they go thru the gate they are not replaced. Lots of beef farmers are doing similar or changing to dairy where the money is.

Lots of sheep farmers doing the same, 10 sheep farms a week are closing down.

If it doesn't change for the better I'll plant more trees and ride my bikes more !

It really peeves me when I see the supermarket specials of meat and know how little we get at the saleyards. That said we got good prices for our cattle when we sold at the end of summer because most of the other animals were in such poor condition!

Tbirdnz - I still can't spot the cows though!

Yes Ice, my ride-on is getting shot, when you're off to OZ don't forget your old mate here, tell your wife to look after it, not to exceed 5km/h and polish it after every use !

I was being sarcastic Steven, what's left of the herd (21) after depleting them over the past year are in the back paddocks behind the photo.

That sounds like an old Goons script
Neddy: Here take this photo of a cow on a hill as part payment.
Eccles: Hey, I don't see no cow.
Neddy: He's on the other side of the hill.
Eccles: Oh, OK.

I`m led to believe that it`s only the massive operators that can make any money and the smaller farmers like T-bird and yourself are getting driven out. Is this true?
