How about we celebrate by adding a few quotes about ENGLAND *thread hijack hope you don't mind GB Rob*)

Bind her, grind her, burn her with fire, Cast her ashes into the sea,-- She shall escape, she shall aspire, She shall arise to make men free; She shall arise in a sacred scorn, Lighting the lives that are yet unborn, Spirit supernal, splendor eternal, England!

I like the idea of a dragon slaying knight, but it sounds like more of a pagan tale than a christian one. Does anybody know the source of the story, & whether there's any historical truth in it?

Oh yeah, & a big fat happy St. G day to y'all, from me too.

As the story goes was one of the knights on the Crusades that killed a Crocodile which then became a dragon etc etc.
Factual or not? Who knows but the bible is believed and the likes of King Arthur etc so why not eh?!?!?!
I guess its just a good reason to be proud to be English (as its not a popular thing to be the rest of the year) the same as St Davids day for Wales, St Andrew for Scotland and St Guiness for Ireland

There are many versions of the St George legend. One of the most popular was that St.George was the Roman General, Publius Ostorius Scapula and the Dragon was Wales, or at that time the South Wales warrior tribe, the Silures, led by Caradoc (caractacus). Caradoc had successfully held out against the Romans for 10 years after they had conquered the rest of England until he was finally defeated in battle and the Silures were driven back into Wales.

Publlius Ostorius Scapula`s battle banner was the flag of the Kingdom of Asturia, a red cross on a white background with Christian significance. It was 300 years later, that it became known as the flag of St George. Caradoc`s battle flag, was the Dragon, clearly pagan. The legend was more about Christianity defeating paganism, than the Romans defeating the Welsh.

Happy St. George`s Day.
