My family owns land in Cleveland, near Mora. Beautiful country but lately nearly devoid of deer. 20 years ago they were everywhere; along with elk and the ubiquitous antelope, especially west towards Ocate and Wagon Mound. But hardly any deer. Everyone in Mora County seems to be involved in poaching, from the UPS driver (my cousin) to the Elementary School Principal, who brought over a delicious elk roast on a recent visit. Maybe that has something to do with dwindling deer population, fully stocked freezers, and safer roads for all. If you hit a deer, make jerky.

The road over the mountains to Cleveland is fantastic. If you need anything checked out, let me know!

At least two riders killed in the Charlotte lately from deer. The nasty creatures are all over the place , on all the roads around here. Maybe its time to start a "Bullets For Bambi" fund on this board to help support our fellow riders who hunt the things.

Deer are bad news for riders. The fatality rate for riders in deer strikes is scary high.

Fortunately in NJ, most deer are only sauntering or standing around eating at the roadside. Every once in a while you'll see a deer cross the road at full speed, and it reminds you to be alert. Dusk seems to be the most dangerous time for deer.

Until they increase the bag limits, ride safe.

Last year I was taking the back-roads to work (just happens to go right by O.C.C.)... and I saw 3 or 4 small deer standing by the side of the road. I had the feeling that one of them was about to go kamakazee on me... so I slowed WAY down and flashed my light at the oncoming traffic while pointing to the deer.

No sooner, the deer slowly walked into oncoming traffic right by me and into the next lane. The cager went full-on with the brakes and stopped right in front of the little guy as it stared at him. You gotta remember, they're not the smartest creatures.

I hit a small spotted one a few years back. I hardly felt a thing except the joy in knowing that there was one less to grow up and cause real damage. I did have a real close call with a rather large black bear. My thoughts as grabbed the brakes was “If I hit him and don’t deal a fatal blow he’s going to be pissed off and eat me” I missed him by a slim margin.

Thanks hd.
I just might take you up on that sometime. Maybe when it's time to bale alfalfa. Where exactly do you live in NM? I grew up in ABQ but spent lots of time up north hunting, fishing, and chasing las chicas. (Apologies for the hijack)
Enjoy your rides in God's Country.
