Kudos to Trypcil, and a question...

My dear Trypcil

You are a faithful, erudite, quick of tongue, single minded thinker who brings wonderful bonhomie to our forums. A wonderful pair of brown shoes in the black tuxedo of life.

I wonder, at times, if our avatars present either an invitation or an impediment. Yours, certainly, is unique. Those with a clown/carnival phobia may be put on their back heels. And mine, well, I shudder to think of the derisive bits of chaw being expectorated into the hard edged spittoons of bikerdom.

Do Avatars influence perception?

IMHO, avatars do not provide a perception. If they did, then one would suspect that my beautiful 2005 TBA doesn't see the road too often.

(Wait, between the weather, my sinus problems, work, and lack of free time, it does sit a lot in my garage.)

He can run, but he can't hide.

Wonderful prose there TBA...

To answer your question, I believe Avatars do influence perception, so I decided to finally dare post one that I felt fits the bill.

Yes, I've enjoyed both his avatar and his comments and observations.

The wonderful thing about the online avatar is that we can ignore its ostensible purpose and do whatever we want with it. Do we intend it as a simple statement of interest, a parody, a reflection of the persona, or a disguise? Or in Trypcil's case, a riddle? I just wanted to be clever, but I had to misspell my avatar for obvious reasons. I also wanted the members' first impressions of me to be the good humored sort.

By the way, Whisper, welcome to the League of the Avatards! I love your choice!

Speaking of Whisper, I don't have a clue as to what some avatars "mean" until I feel I know enough about the person. Whether what we "know" about each other through our words is an entirely different topic (see "Is This Really You?" for a recent poke at that one.) It didn't take me long to learn that TBA's life and interests are worlds beyond the 18th hole.

I'd like to think that I feel neither invited nor repelled by a member's avatar (well, DrewDesign's spider-eating girl was king of hard on the eyes). A picture of a guy doing a wheelie won't stop me from engaging him on the topic o' the day. Does a picture of a guy doing a wheelie influence my perception of him? Well, I admit that I might be quicker to believe that he is a hooligan (in a good way of course!) than I would to label Trypcil as a clown.

I do not understand the avatar question.

I just used my latest "Glamour Shot" photo.

Doesn't everyone?

Didn't you mean to post this on the Helmet Head thread?
