Down but not out

I went in for a wee operation on my left ankle last week, to remove a screw that had been put in to help a fracture heal over twenty years ago. The sawbones had to chisel away the bone round about the screw head, and still couldn't get the **** thing out.

(WD40, application of a blow torch, mash hammer or an impact driver were out of the question apparently)

Upshot is I will be crocked for a wee while. Hope the old peg is healed enough for me to be riding again in a few weeks.

Still on the bright side, this is conclusive proof that, contrary to what some people say, I don't have a screw loose.........

Looks like I may have the time to look in on the BHO a little more for a while too.

Levanvale, you've got to get that thing out of there or you're screwed. You'll never get through airport security!

To bad they couldn't use and impact driver. That is one sweet tool that has bailed me out several times. But then again, I've never had a pull a screw out of someone's foot.

Well, be good to yourself in the mean time. Hope you're not in too much pain.

That metal detector thing was one of my party tricks - looks like I will be able to keep doing it! Trying to keep the pain meds to a minimum - presently enjoying a glass of wine.

Levenvale why did you bother trying to remove a screw that had been in 20 years?

I had three of those puppies used to screw my ankle back together after breaking it parachuting when I was 19, that was 35 years ago. I never even think of them anymore, although I do remember that for about 15 years afterward I would get a zinging feeling if I pushed on the scars.

Glass of wine?

My dear Lev, is this what has happened to your once great Single Malt nation?

Tsk...

I'll just have to imbibe your share of the good stuff.

Flatheat? Phillips? Allen? Torx? If it's that hard to get out, it's probably a good thing that he gave up.

Take good care of yourself. Rest, relax, post. Got any x-rays you could post?

LV - I was interested to read this; I have ten in my right leg and a plate too (a football injury similar the one suffered by Eduardo at Arsenal last weekend).

It sounds nasty. Why did they want it out at this stage? Was it causing you a problem? They told me that sinew and muscle would just grow around mine and it would just become a part of my leg, so they wouldn't be taking it out. Fourteen years on and whilst I can occasionally feel it ache when there's cold weather coming, I can do nearly everything I used to. I even played football briefly again.

Amazing though how quickly things can heal if you take it easy, so rest up and follow the advice of the rest of the team here, and you'll soon be back in the saddle without needing to "chase the summer"

Man, I've got 48 screws and two titanium strips in my collarbone and scapula for 4 years now. I hope they never want to open me up and take them out!

Flippin thing started playing up last year. The specialist reckoned that removing the screw was the best thing to do. Wrong!
