How to find a good accountant...

My taxes are going to be very complicated this year and I need to hire an accountant.

Anyone out there have any pointers on how to find a good one?

Or, perhaps, know a good one in the Los Angeles area?

I've heard that going to H&R Block is a terrible idea, so what can I do to make sure that the guy who handles my taxes does his best (legally) to get me the most money back.

The last few years I went on someone else's recommendation and used the accountant that sets up shop at the supermarket of all places! But the man is on top of things. He gets me a HUGE refund every year so we just keep going back to him.

Accounting is like many other things - It seems to me that you get what you pay for. If you have complicated taxes spend the few hundred bucks to get a shark - he will save you twice what you paid him. He has a vested interest in making you come out on the good side as long as he keeps it on the right side of the grey area

Ask a few local real estate workers - those who buy multiple houses in a year and they will be able to hook you up with a good firm or individual.

Tricky stuff here.
I have complicated taxes, as well. I know just enough to be very wary of the strip mall part timers, as well as the high end, high priced accountancy firms.
I've been extremely pleased with doing my own thing using Turbo Tax.
You may want to give that a run through before farming your return out.
Just a thought.

Make sure your accountant likes what he's doing...
