Earthquake in England

Unusual event during the night, there was an earthquake in England at about 1.00 a.m. It was the highest recorded for 20 years at 5.2. I know it's pretty tame compare to other parts of the world but unusual here in the UK. I woke up at about that time but didn't know why until I heard about it on the news when I got up this morning.

5.2?
That wouldn't have even woken up a Kiwi.
Did any crockery break?

Indeed. I'm on Nottingham, about 40 miles SW of the epicentre and it woke the whole house.

I know it was roughly the equivalent of dropping another sugar cube into a cup of coffee for our Pacific Rim cousins, but it was pretty dramatic for us.

Oh yeah!....

Our family lived around 23 miles east of down town Los Angeles. Felt many a quake. Lived there during the 1971 San Fernando earthquake
which was 6.6 and was quite a shaker. Any shaker or jolts are always something that will get your attention.
Thinking of this made me recall my childhood in Las Vegas. The whole town used to go outside and observe the atom bomb detanations in the 50's.
I remember watching everyone in the neighborhood sitting on their roofs enjoying the lightshow! You could feel the ground shake from those babies!

Hey, there's no need to diminish a 5.2 by comparing it with what goes on in other parts of the world. When the earth moves below your feet, that is a freaking unsettling experience, especially if you've never felt one before.

I've lived in California, Alaska, and Washington State for most of my life, so I'm no stranger to earthquakes, but I remember the first time I ever felt one. It felt like everything I ever learned in life was a lie, like nothing was certain if you can't even depend on the ground below you. By the time you feel your next one, you know what to do, but it still rattles you a bit.

Too true mrmellow,

This is the first big shake here for some 25 years and the noise was unbelievable (which strangley enough came before the shake here) Where I live the whole house appeared to move (I was in bed at the time) and it felt almost like being in boat on water.
Glad I don't live at the top of a tower block....
