Pubs vs Bars

I was watching some Anthony Bourdain show where he was in England prattling about Brexit but that's not the reason for this post. Do pubs in Britain really stop serving at midnight? I have no idea if this is true. Rule of thumb here is the Bars close at two.

Midnight. Really?

It used to be 10pm, but I believe that's been extended in recent years.

In the 70s, I arrived in London at midnight on a delayed ferry train, and the Underground (subway) was closed. There weren't many taxis to be found either.

When I was there 40 years ago, laws were: open at noon, close at 3:00 pm, reopen at 6:00 pm, close at 10:00 or 11:00 pm, depending on district/county/whatever the term is. My cousins said they've repealed those laws, but generally they aren't like the US, where I grew up it was 2:00 am closing, then we crossed the bridge to Erie County where it was 4:00 am on weekends, hopefully avoiding the cops.

If it's a bar, you can be pretty sure Jon Taffer has already- or is about to- have a meltdown because the bar is dirty.
If it's a pub, you can be pretty sure Gordon Ramsay has already- or is about to- have a meltdown because they've used so much salt an entire Roman Legion will have to go without pay this month.

Bar/Pub: samey-same. The only difference is what celebrity is screaming about it at any given time :D

General rule of thumb is that they tend to close at 12, you can have an extended licence too 1, or all night in certain areas, (I think). Some pub's use to be open all night for certain trades i.e. 'The Print' etc.
Don't really have bars here! Generally get a 'Lock in' anyway at your local, many a morning get the bread and milk for breakfast on the way home!

Back in the 80s when I spent a short time at RAF Sculthorpe, the pubs in town(Fakenham?) closed at 11 and sidewalks were rolled up. I learned to make sure I called a cab before said 11 pm, lol.

We had pubs hundreds of years before we "found" Indians drinking their own loopy-juice in the "new world". "Bars" was just the name we gave to pubs in a new land where others lived.

Yep. There are nightclubs that stay open much later, but that's a different scene entirely. Last business trip to London my hotel room was across the street from a nightclub (thanks corporate travel office), I swear it didn't get quiet til 3 or 4am... Never again.

It depends on the local authority and demand. Pubs in the tourist hot-spots often stay open until 2am. My daughter had a summer job this year working as a bar maid and I had to collect her each evening; and then get up at 7 am to walk dogs!
