We are pet-heavy around here, but down to one dog right now. 3/4 lab 1/4 poodle mix. That's a lot of poodle. We're used to down-to-earth working dogs, this one is quirky.

My daughter went to college this fall and has a service dog in-training. We had it all summer, and still see him a lot helping take him back-and-forth to training, so I count him family. Border Collie, at least mostly:

We lost Amber the Golden this summer. Her spirit still haunts the couch, so I include her too:

Two cats.

And three rats. They were daughters and now we have them while she's away. Honestly, they're cool little pets. Very smart and friendly and social. I like them quite a bit. Not sure if these are the ones we have now. They seem to die and get replaced with some frequency.

This is Coby:

He is about 7 1/2 now. We got him from a shelter, where a friend found him just over 6 years ago. He was a day away from getting the needle, but she signed the papers to stop it and promised to find him a home, or take him herself. We got an email that day and picked him up a week or so later. He spent the first year or so of his life tied to a tree behind some schitehead's house, ignored and alone. According to the shelter they just threw him scraps of food every now and again. He was so neglected that his never changed collar became impacted into his neck, and had to be surgically removed after they rescued him from that hell. God help those people, if I ever find out who they are.

You would forgive him for being a affected by that, but he isn't, or...maybe he is. He is the most loving, fun, and gentle dog I've ever seen. every person and dog he meets is instantly his friend. All the neighbor kids love him, and he they. It's possible that due to all the affection he missed while a puppy, he's trying to make up for lost time. :dunno He's listed as a shepherd mix by the county, but friends who know more than I do think he has a significant amount of Akita in him. It doesn't matter to me. He's just my best friend.

Somehow nothing effects me or strikes an emotional cord in me harder than hearing about abused pets like this. How can anyone mistreat a dog? All they want to do is be our friends. Good you have him. Bet he rescues you some every day. Mine are rescues too, and I know they have made me a better person.

These aren't my dogs. If you haven't been reading the "Dragon Accident" thread, or didn't click the link for the latest update posted by JRobyn, you missed this:

That's the guy who survived the accident and about 30 hours on the side of the mountain before being rescued. Girls, even wives, come and go, but dogs are for life. It's just a shame theirs are so relatively short.

Thanks for posting this up man. I watched the videos, and thought it was awesome that at first he addressed his girl, the. His dogs. I feel like I would have done the same in my situation. I'm glad he pulled through, that's one bad mother right there.
