Just on the news - Indian firm Mahindra has purchased the BSA company , whatever that entails.

I wonder if we are going to see Lightnings and Rocket lll's again? Make mine red please.:smile2:

Quite possible they have something like that in mind given that Royal Enfield is set to push out a couple of twins next year to follow up on the serious interest in classic style bikes with modern engineering.

IF that is true and IF they really intend to resurrect the BSA brand and IF they build motorcycles like they build tractors, then Triumph doesn't have anything to worry about.

This from a former Hornet & Lightning owner! I loved my BSA's . . . the power & the glory, as they used to say!

Reading further , it appears Mohindra are partnered with Peugeot and already building scooters and small bikes. Guess we will just have to see.

I know the Jeep knockoffs were woeful quality but maybe some European input might help?

I dare them to build a modern version of this:

Give Bloor's retro Bonnies a run. Gotta be a market. Hipsters would love 'em. Just don't follow Norton's example... with a hand built high priced boutique bike.

I would rather have the hand built boutique bike, than the POS from India. :3dcool

Hopefully they might look at resurrecting the beautiful Rocket 3?
The real ones are getting pricy and if they can make reliable Royal Enfields they can easily make these.

I'd even be happy to park it in the garage and just admire it. There is absolutely no reason why they can't easily duplicate or exceed 1960's technology and manufacturing standards if they go to it with a will and with an eye to capture some export market share.
The Indians also have some of the most sought after engineers in the world , like it or not.

Even Harley Davidson is building bikes in India now.

I have not heard good things about the royal enfields. And HD building bikes there is not reassuing, neither is 1960s technology. :D

(DISCLAIMER: I am neither at present an RE owner nor have I ever been a RE owner)

The Royal Enfields, while not exactly up to snuff in the West, are very well-suited for the market in India; they're everywhere (which means parts are everywhere), and all you need to repair them is a hammer and maybe another hammer. Fit and finish leave a lot to be desired for our taste, but when you're negotiating dusty trails and muddy paths all the f&f is pretty irrelevant. Power? Eh, when is Apu going to need to go 0-60 in .3 seconds anywhere- and what flat, paved road is he planning on using?

As for the BSA badge being resurrected, we'll just have to see what they come up with and hope it's good. To be honest, though, I'm not holding my breath over it.

BSA = Bright Shiny Accessories?

My first bike was a BSA bantam125cc bored out to 150cc WOW!, stripped for "bush bashing" it was a fun bike to burn around on after school. My first road bike was a Triumph Tiger 110 650cc.I did my license test on a 350cc Jawa.

As for Flying_Celt's comment about the '80's, hope he realizes the communist union at Longbridge killed Leyland which was a Labor Party "Solyndra" from the get-go. Maggie simply eliminated anything which couldn't sustain itself.

This thread took a turn somewhere but look what polaris reviving Indian has done for the american market, If the BSA badge is done right Triumph will have competition always a good thing for the consumer. BSA comes out with updated models that triumph have let stagnate on the floor 10 years or more, oh h e l l yes

The thing Triumph seems to have not figured out is if they aren't going to spend on advertising then they need to do semi annual updates to get the press talking about models and generate interest. I don't expect non motorcycle enthusiasts to know what a triumph is but come on this is ridiculous, and a new brand if they went directly at triumph might actually not steal sales but bring more riders into the fold and triumph is still a british brand and maintain some edge there.
