As he successfully managed it, I'd say his stupidity is adequately compensated for by his skills level.
Not that I'd recommend it to anyone.
A friend of mine died when he was knocked off his push-bike while trying to carry his entire drum kit on it.
So the consequenses of stuffing up are dire.

I hope they don't find him; the judge would probably rake him over the coals.

Maybe he couldn't find carbon fiber bits, and misunderstood the term "lighter fluid."

He was on a toy run benefiting the cattlemen's association.

He's gathering supplies to research charcoal-into-oil technology.

He believes in being prepared for any animals he might hit.

He misheard when his wife suggested he take their little girl out for a ride.
