Front number plates
Can you believe this. Not content with ripping millions of dollars off (mainly) motorists who exceed the speed limit by a few Kmph, the Government can't stand the idea of some motorcyclists getting away with speeding because of a lack of a front number plate.
Victoria may be the first to bring this in but you can bet the treasurers of all the other states will also want to get their grubby hands on the extra funds.
..and will the extra revenue go to road safety? Pigs might fly.

That's a load of Bull. The majority of the southern states here don't even have front plates on the cars! Seems to me it would be as simple as to turn the speed camera around to catch the rear plate. Leave it to a Government to find a 22 million dollar fix for a camera that they installed backwards.

What about speeding making a turn?
now you need them on the sides.
Why not just put tires on a plate and ride that? sheesh, how dumb. what ever happened to cops in cars?

Back in the '70s, all bikes in at least NSW if not all of Australia, had front plates.
I cannot remember when the front plates were dropped, but I do remember that it had to do with safety and money saving.
It seems that they have short memories in Vic.

I've heard that some states are trying out dual camera set-up's, with a forward & rearward camera.
I'm surprised that we still need number plates. The technology's been around for years, to put a transponder in every vehicle, that emits an ID code, which a speed camera could capture. It could also be used to stop an engine, to catch offenders, & could even check on your milage, so you pay for how many miles you do, in your registration.
I believe the only reason it hasn't been done already, is that it's still percieved to be politically unpopular.
But the authorities have been scaring us with safety & security concerns for so long now. It can't be long before public opinion gets onside enough, for them to bring it in.

They just installed red light camera/radar system at an intersection near where I work. They take 2 pictures of "violators", one from the front and one from the rear. They use the picture taken from the front with face recognition software to match against drivers license photos to get an ID. 1984 is here! Most cars and all motorcycles have only rear tags in AZ.

What I can't get my head round with speeding is - if the maximum speed limit is i.e. 70mph (as it is over here) why does the government allow vehicles to be sold, which can exceed that limit?
They allow both, cars and bikes on the roads that are capable of achieving twice the maximum speed limit - Why?

I can't work it out either.
Especially now that it's possible to vary speed-limiters electronically.
So a vehicle's speed can be capped at that speed zones limit, & changed when it enters another zone.
It's been talked about for years, & it can't be long before it get's introduced, & we're all driving/riding speed limited vehicles, being kept a regulated distance apart, by proximity sensors.
There's nothing sci-fi about any of this.
In fact it's been around long enough now, to be considered old tech.
So it's only the political climate that's keeping it out of our lives (& long may that continue)

Well, yes, it's possible, but....no more income from speeding fines?
I don't think various governments want us to slow down that much!

I'd really like to be able to challenge that.
But with our state govt's being as addicted to something that's as socialy destructive as Poker Machines, as any of the poor saps pushing the poverty button's, in this country's clubs & pubs.
I can't.
