Riding the 101, suggested points!
I’m in the process of planning a trip on my Speedy in June, 08 with one of the kids and his soon to be purchased bike.
My interest is the 101 from the bay area down to Santa Barbara. I drove the route many years ago by car and thus I’m sure missed many interesting things. I’m fairly familiar with the So Cal, PCH portion but am interested in the beautiful stretch I described.
Does anyone have suggestions about “can’t miss” areas? Restaurants, scenic views, bed & breakfast etc... Certainly we consider evening refreshments as part of the equation.

One think I like to do is take a side trip on Highway 46, from Cambria, to the 101 and Atascadero, and back down on Highway 41 to Morro Bay. I can't remember which, but one (or both) of those highways offer absolutely heart-stopping views of the ocean from the coastal foot hills. I stopped there for 4 hours one morning and just soaked it in. Instead of a loop, you could just go up, and then back down those highways so you can pick up the 1 where you left off.
Not much farther south on the 1 is the must-stop city of San Luis Obispo. Wander around by the creek that runs through town, have lunch, a beer, and just take it in.
Further north, if you haven't done it before, Hearst Castle, although some might consider it a tourist trap, is a fascinating thing to see. There are several state beaches (like San Simeon) if you're into taking a dip.
At several places along the way, between Big Sur and Cambria, there are trail heads at some of the inside bends. If you're into it, a short canyon hike is a good way to stretch.
The best part about the 1 is the 1 itself. Turn-outs are always good, but watch out for idiots in sports cars who treat the highway as their personal raceway.
Others who live around there will have more specific suggestions.

You can't go wrong with any of it. Among my personal favorites in that area are Santa Cruz, Monterey, Pescadero, & Half Moon Bay. Each offers a very different experience.
That said, my favorite stretch is north of SF to Point Reyes. The word "spectacular" doesn't do it justice. The following link will get you started:

I wish I was going with you. Enjoy.

I think it's fun to stop at Alice's Restaurant in Woodside. Lots of bikers there, and great food. From San Francisco:
- 280 south to 92 towards Half Moon Bay
- 92 to 35 (Skyline Drive). Alice's is at 35 and La Honda.
- After eating, continue down 35 to Highway 9. That will lead you back to Highway 1 at Santa Cruz.
I took the same trip, from LA to San Francisco last October, but South to North. As people have said, you can't describe how pretty it is. Take your time and enjoy it.

Both roads offer scenic value for your ride. One is of the diverse agriculture of California and rural towns, the other the endless view of the Pacific Ocean ( sightseeing here could cause a mishap). Highway One does have a draw back as picturesque as it is, you have watch out for tour buses.
The Madonna Inn on hwy 101 in San Luis Obispo a unique kind of hotel, where each room has a different theme. Some love it , some dislike it.
Example the Yosemite Rock room...

I have traveled hwy 1 from Washington/Oregon border to San Diego by car and will not do that again, except if I was on a motorcycle.
If you cannot decide do a loop using both. Either way it will be an enjoyable ride.

depends on how long you want to take...but I would take the 1 down as it has the better views then riding it north. 46 is a drag, too many people, but 41 east through Atascadero and then on to the 229 south to the 58. From there it's decision time. If you go west, you'll hit Santa Margarita and then to the 101 south and from there I can tell you a different route, But if you take the 58 east, make sure you get gas in Atascadero. The 58 is awesome, it will take you through the Carrizo Plains which look good during the early summer. From there you'll hit the 33, and go south through TAFT arg..... The 33 merges with the 166, head west until it branches off again..so 33 south through the Los Padres forest into Ojai. Take the 150 west to the 192, if you want to ride through the back part of Santa Barbara. If not, the 150 will take you to the 101, head north (just a little ways) to SB. Find Milpas st. and head north towards the hills until you find a little white with green trim restaurant that will have a line of people out the door. 622 north milpas. You have just found one of the best Mexican eateries on the central/socal coast, La Supa Rica!!!! Google map the roads and towns and you won't have any problems navigating your way about.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
Is it necessary to reserve motel rooms or are there plenty to choose from?
