I would then tell guy#2 that I will call him and give him the next shot at it if guy#1 fails to go through with the deal at the time we had arranged.
That's what I think is fair. Am I wrong?

Today I (guy #1) had an arrangement, or so I thought to check out and most certainly buy a bike, but Guy#2 showed up and the seller sold it to him while I was in route to go see it.
No hard feelings, its fine. Nothing personal, just a bummer for me. I guess.
But it got me to thinking.....do you adhere to a buyer/seller code of conduct? Is it "first come first served" or a "deal is a deal."

Wow, that exact same scenario happened to me when I tried to by my 1st bike. It was an older GSXR 750, had 30,xxx miles on it and had been repainted gold (yuk). As I was driving the 30+ miles to take a look at it, I received a call from the seller while I was 4 blocks away from his house. He told me someone just bought the bike. They showed up with cash, and it was gone. I was really p.o.'d, but now that I look back on it, I'm better off not having that bike. All those miles, probably rode hard quite often as are most GSXR's. It would have been more trouble than I care to get into for a Jap bike. And now I own one of my favorite bikes ever! A super fast 2006 black Speed Triple. It was a a blessing. None the less, I thought the way it went down was pretty lame.

I think that's the key to it. If you tell someone you'll hold it until a certain time, then do it. If you don't want to do that, then just tell them so...save everyone some hassle.

I always tell perspective buyers that the first one who shows up with the money gets the bike. I have held a bike for a clearly defined and limited time based on receiving a serious deposit. That's not too unreasonable, because if I get another serious looker I can tell them to check back in 2 days - or whatever time the hold agreement expires. That's for local sales.

It gets a bit more complicated with eBay, Cycle trader - long distance sales. A guy drove halfway across the country in his pickup truck to buy my 2003 Suzuki VStrom. I was able to confirm with the issuing bank that he had acquired a certified check from them, along with the amount of the check and the serial number on the check. Based on that I held the bike for him for 5 days, even though I was still getting phone calls on the bike. He showed up as promised, presented the check described by the bank, and everything went well.

I will stick to any agreement that I make, even in the face of another person waving cash at me. But I don't make any agreement without evidence of serious intent to purchase - usually in the form of a deposit. So far, I've never been burned by keeping my word.

I said, "I will buy the bike, if the bike is as described."
He said it would be here for me, we had an agreed time to make the deal.
So either the bike wasn't exactly as promised or as I suspect I was used as leverage for another prospectful buyer and guy#2 was willing to pay more than me.
Oh well. Probably better off, it was an incredible deal though. Now I'll just spend that money on my bike and gets oem goodies.

Like most people, I agree that first come first served is fine, so long its upfront.
I often sell stuff the same way. But I make that clear in my ad or when communicating to the prospective buyer.
