I'm pretty sure he was joking, Medic. We banter back and fouuth all in good fun.

Update for everyone else:

I've put her in touch with a local shop that I think will either be able to perform the work for a much cheaper cost than Midas. I use these guys for all of my tire/alignment stuff and it sounds like she's not far from where they're located but they're not open today. I didn't know how pressed she was for time, but due to the wet weather, she said that she would probably wait until better weather to press on anyway. So, that's the plan; if Sams alignment can beat that crazy price (which is nuts, by the way for a brake job) then she'll be all set. If not, I can meet up with her and do it tomorrow...

...and for the record, $700 for that brake job is higher than dealer prices on an 06 VW Passat!!! In my experience, Midas has a tendancy to do that on estimates. That's absurd.

Fivehundo, you're a hero.

I just spoke with my daughter. She repeatedly had Fivehundo on the phone today, until she was able to decide which shop to trust with fixing her van. He checked things out for her, spoke with her as much as she needed. It'll cost her about half of what the cheapest option was from Midas last week. She sounds much relieved.

Really young fella, if I didn't know better (from your profile), I'd think you're some soft old codger like me . You've done good. A lot of it. Sure, it wasn't life or death; but your patience and kindness have gone a long way to making a young lady feel a whole lot better and her father relieved to know that she got the help she needs.

And to all of us, this is a great example and reminder of the power of forums like this. Complete strangers helping each other out just because we are internally driven to do so (okay, I believe that is a Divine drive in Man's soul); or just making asses of ourselves for each other's amusement.

Seriously, big THANKS to Fivehundo and a clap on the back to all of us for revealing some of the great good that is out there.

I feel a kind of bad because it sounds like she got a bad diagnosis from one shop, that said she had a bad booster. I've never replaced a booster before and I didn't really feel comfortable doing it on someone else's car for the first time. From what she was telling me, the last shop she saw said that wasn't the case and the brakes just needed replacement. I could have done that myself and saved her a few more bucks but we thought it was the booster...

Well, I'm glad she saved as much money as she did. Let me know if I can do anything else...

The way she told it to me was, the first shop said she had a bad booster. The second shop insisted she doesn't even have power brakes (I didn't remember that was possible on a '73 van!), showed her where it would be if she did have a booster, and she didn't. That part does kind of concern me, because I can't imagine a shop not knowing if she had a power booster or not.

In any case, she certainly sounded a lot more confident that you helped her get it straight in a big way. Thanks!

Well, I'm glad I could help. One things was certain: Midas was really trying to rip her off. I've seen quite a bit of that out of them, though...

As the daughter of two young girls my heart was in my throat reading this post - way to go fivehundo. After what happened to to that poor girl hiking in GA I can only imagine how you were feeling Medic. This will never make the media, but it goes to prove that there is still much good in this world - much of it right here on the old rat nest.

Another forum I frequent (Hot Rod related, not bikes) had an extensive thread on experiences with Midas center's across the country...Not a good advert for the company!!

Glad your daughter got her van repaired at a reasonable cost.
