Anyone into digital photography?
I plan on buying a Nikon D40X ( roughly 700 dollars, depending on the package ) to take to South Africa to visit my sister.
Just wondering if anyone else is into digital SLR's and amateur photography. If you own a D40x pleeeeease post your review of it. I'd love to hear what you have to say about it.

I'm sorry I can't speak to that particular camera. I just selected a Canon Digital Rebel XTi over other brands because of what appeared to me to be a wider selection of non-proprietary lenses. There was a recent thread on cameras that you should check out. Lots of good information as I recall. It's good you're asking, though, because now that we know you're going to South Africa, we will be expecting great shots!

I keep looking at digitals to replace my kodak p&s I bought 5 years ago, but can't find anything that seems significantly better than it in a package smaller than my old Canon AE-1 which continues to serve to this day. The cost of getting film developed for it is definitely going to be one of the deciding factors when I do make the change.

Kory, I've got a Nikon myself and have always found it to be solid and reliable. I'm semi-pro and use the D2 series cameras, but I've heard good things about the consumer range. Check out www.nikoncafe.com ... it's a very friendly community. You'll be able to find as much information as you need (much like here for Triumphs).

Ya might want to contact BlueJ - this guy can really shoot some nice stuff; and I'm not just talking about his girlfriend! There are a couple of other real good photographers here but i can't remember off hand. Take a look at the members albums and then PM these peeps with questions.

If you already have a bunch of Nikon lenses, get a Nikon - but only if they fit. Otherwise consider what you'll be likely photographing, Buy lenses of quality and focal length that you can afford and put them on a Canon camera- there will be a conversion factor often or not - sensor size to 35mm ratio - ie 20mm lens for the 35mm format will appear to cover as a 32mm in the digital format - if the conversion is 1.6 to 1 . The camera is not really that much different to that of a food processor - a Sunbeam, Oster, etc...... it's the ingredients, or in this case the lens, that matters. The camera is just an image capturing device - the real goings on are between 'you', via the lens to the subject - the camera itself won't give you good photos but a crappy lens will affect quality. If you're intending to shoot Lions or the such like you might be a bit miffed if all you've got is a 50mm and a short zoom. You might as well have gotten a 'Sureshot', or something. But all these cameras are much of a muchness, photographers are usually obsessed with lenses, if they're working. The canon rebel is at $500 now, less even! Have a good tryp! If you're planning to shoot wildlife (with the camera, that is), you need at least 6x zoom to get decent shots. More is better, but it can become unwieldy in terms of camera movement.

Trypcil, I'm impressed. I posted a similar response on an earlier post, but you must drive the girls wild when you talk technical. Seriously, as a retired pro, I love Nikon, but if I were doing it all over, I would go with Canon, simply because of the cost factors vs. results.

There was a thread earlier about DSLRs but I can't find it.
I'd say, for the money, you're better off with the Digital Rebel XTi. I have a Canon 40D that I am using to start a little business with.
The XTi has the same resolution as mine (10.1 MP) and it can use all the same lenses. The lenses are the important part and Canon has some really good ones. Their L series lenses, while expensive, have excellent quality. The thing that sets Canon apart from the rest, in my opinion, is their customer service. Every time I've ever dealt with them, they are good as gold. That goes a long way in my book.
You'll find that a lot of people are very loyal to certain brands of cameras. Nikon has a lot of followers but ask the pros what they think. Watch a sporting even and see how many white lenses there are...
...those are all Canons.
