Are we on the right track?
I just finished Ted Simon's two "Jupiter" books. For those who aren't familiar with them, Ted is the fellow who road his Triumph Tiger 500 around the world in 1972. He took four years and compiled marvelous stories. He repeated his journey in 2002 (I think) and reflected somberly, the changes he saw between the two journeys. Not positive.
I deleted the earlier section I had here. I was told it was too political and non-bike related. Sorry, I won't make that mistake again.

I had really hoped that the September 11th attack would be a big first step in halting our slide into total, safety-obsessed, criminal-pandering, silvery minnow-coddling insanity. I thought that the silver lining on that terrible cloud would be a step back from the self-indulgent fear of anything resembling risk that has come to dominate much of western society.
Oh well.

Ah harumph! I can't wait 'till the looting starts.
Seriously, it always seems to get worse before it gets better. One problem with that is there's not a lot of respect for the wheels of history and we get run over time and again by whoever is driving at the moment. I'm optimistic enough not to believe in the inevitability of doom (except on a cosmic scale), but I'm also discouraged by the fact that I've heard "enough is enough" too many times to believe it.
