Triumph Simulator
Just wanted to point out this short item about a Triumph Daytona being used for a pioneering motorcycle simulator being built at the University of Nottingham.

I see the finished project being ideal for you guys that hang up your bikes in the winter, now you will be able to virtual ride in your own living rooms, that should please the wife !
Language ? UK local dialect, not too sure if it was from around Notts though ! The first guy probably from around NE England ?

Unless I missed it, they never said what kind of research they'll be doing. Presumably not racing development, and they mentioned safety a few times, but that's a pretty broad topic. I guess the idea is to develop something like the driving simulator I got to play with a few times for a certain main battle tank. Sorry, I mean 'train on.' Did I say play with?
So I'm picturing the bike being moved by hydraulic arms in response to the riders input, but how will they simulate the feeling of weight being transferred to the rear wheel during acceleration? Inputs like that are critical to a rider's perception of what is possible on a motorcycle, especially in serious maneuvering such as accident avoidance. Simulating it perfectly in the software won't do any good unless the rider gets the necessary input and can therefore respond just as he would on the road.

Very interesting work. This kind of thing really should have been done long ago. We know a great amount about the physics of riding, tuning, suspension set-up. How much study has gone into the human operating the machine? How about some riding standard operating procedures? Wouldn't that help the new riders as well as the old saws?
I'm glad to see someone is taking up this task. I'm eager to see what they learn.

My post was hard on your heels hidesert. I would think that electric actuators would likely be used. The hydraulics tend to be slower and, in theory, more labor intensive than the electrics. We have both kinds in our aviation facility.

When I opened it and started watching, I thought it was the start of that commercial with the guy walking around saying, "Can you hear me now?"
As word of this effort gets out, I would expect them to start to receive more funding from the manufacturers. I just hope they reject any connection to the insurance industry.

Looks like there will be yet another group of academics telling us how to ride safely.
I will be surprised if any real benefits filter down to us riders.
Forgive my cynicism.
