Mobile Phones

A question, is it dangerous to use a mobile when driving? is there a blanket ban on this because no one can safely drive and use a mobile or is it just a blanket law to cover those who obviously cannot do more than one thing at a time, I only ask this as it appears to me that laws such as speed limits on corners etc have to be aimed at the lowest common denominater, lewis hamilton/Valentino could take bend A, at 100mph your gran would struggle at 30, I am throwing this open to debate after reading the "what would you ban" thread and so many saying the use of mobiles whilst driving, if simply driving a vehicle takes all your mental capacity then talking on a phone would put you over the edge, if however driving takes say 10% then simply using a phone would not make you dangerous, it seems that all driving rules are aimed at the worst case drivers and as everyone thinks they are really good they ignore the laws, (I must add that in both my car and truck I am fully hands free) but how much safer is hands free you are still using some mental capacity to hold the conversation and only a tiny amount more to hold the phone to your ear after all. I am sure you can think of other examples of why and what the laws of the road are aimed at, I am also sure I will get some real thought and input from the gentlemen and ladies of this esteemed forum and the usual Bolix from the rest!!! opinions please, or just ignore my ramblings and I will go away again.

Doodle, good point about different abilities to handle distraction. I feel like I can do it safely, but don't. I've noticed two things that make it distracting. One is all the fiddle-farting around with dialing and looking at the thing. But I've seen women putting on lipstick while driving so I guess there's more than one way to be distracted. I suppose hands-free would make a big difference.

The other is more insidious. Whoever it is you're talking to doesn't see where you're going or what you're up against. A passenger in the front seat with you would likely see what you see and shut the hell up (or yell a warning) if there's danger (I said likely, not certainly). A caller who doesn't see what you see will just jabber on, oblivious.

Yes, there are those out there that cannot chew gum and walk at the same time. Those kind of people all own cell phones. Case in point; today my bud and I wen't for a nice ride. We came to a stop sign behind a cage with a female talking on the cell phone. She sat there for a moment, then without warning decided to take a hard right onto the grass of the gas station that was on the corner. She didn't even look in her rearview mirror. Was she a danger to us? Probably not since we were behind her and stopped. Was it a smart move on her part? Not really. If she wasn't gabbing away she would have noticed she needed gas sooner.

Then there are those that "text" while driving. Believe me, I have seen this. I think it is the most retarded thing a person can do while behind the wheel.

The "no using cell phones while driving" law can be compared to a speed limit if you ask me. You're only going to be fined if you are caught.

Speaking purely for myself, I find it very distracting when women put on lipstick while driving.

The question I'd really like to see some hard data about is a comparison of cell phone use vs. CD manipulation or stereo equalizer tuning.

Years ago my little sister ran her first car into a tree while trying to tune the radio...lol She wasn't hurt, but it killed the car. If it wasn't for the tree, she would have ended up in the peoples living room.

Speaking from a Firefighter point of view I would rather see a person talking on a phone then playing playstation or watching rap videos in the monitors they have mounted in ten different areas of the car. I saw one the other day I was riding behind her and she was watching a video in the sunvisor screen at a light. She was dancing while sitting in the drivers seat and the car had enough low B bass comeing out of it I couldn't hear my D&Ds.

There is no "blanket" ban on cell phone and driving use though a couple of states have banned it. Studies are showing using a cell phone while driving is as dangerous as drinking and driving. You'll be seeing more bans going into effect on this I believe as more data comes up on it.
