I have been watching a fair bit of bike wins and fails on you tube lately and just wondered if the groups of sports bikes doing wheelies down highways is a common thing or just the odd thing here and there from what I have watched the police do not seem to have much control over it . We do not have that problem here .I am keeping in mind that everything on the internet is most definitely true
It's true. Major issue in NYC with gangs of riders on the streets with dirt bikes and ATV not legal for road use and all the other antisocial behaviors. The police in NYC are now confiscating these illegal bikes and crushing them. But, it's not just NYC, other areas and cities as well. Having Youtube certainly seems to encourage the antics.
If you want to see wheelies come to Tampa, Fl and spend some time on one of the three bridges/causeways that connect Tampa to Clearwater/St Pete. The sport bike riders consider these their private playground.
It's also a thing in DC and Baltimore. Not only the sports bikes on the freeways - apparently the beltway around DC is a popular playground for them - but there are also groups who ride dirtbikes and quads on city streets, sidewalks, and I guess wherever the hell they want. Several months ago there was a video on the news of one of them on a quad running a police officer over to get away.
I'm appalled by the last bit, where the police say they found the owner but he wasn't involved. BULL! I seriously doubt the thing was stolen.
My wife was hit by a car in March, driver wasn't owner and panicked and ran when he realized we'd called cops and ambulance (she has a broken leg). I had pictures of the insurance card, the plate, and the VIN plate, as well as of the driver. He claimed he didn't have license on him, but we have all the info. Now owner is saying they don't know who was driving. We told investigator to ask her how she got her car back then. He'd left it behind, and came back for it before cops could tow it.
Wheelies are super-cool and will score you chicks galore!!!
On second thoughts, maybe they're not....they're good to know so that if the bike does one over a hump in the track...or even the road, then you know how to react (ie, not panic), but other than that there's not much point.
Be cool to do if I ever won a race, but the chances of that are slim, and wheelies for penultimate place would look a bit silly.
first time I popped a wheelie was going over "the mountain" at Cadwell park , didnt like the complete loss of feeling with no wheel on the ground. I like to do corners , the front wheel needs to be on the ground:smile2:
We don't have too much trouble with groups, but a lot of individuals riding dirt bikes illegally. Couple of years ago, one was killed in a single-vehicle crash, he'd seen cops and sped off, crashing into several parked cars in the end. His mother blames the police for chasing him, which wasn't even true, Philly PD has a policy of not chasing such bikes with cars. He simply panicked. His death was completely his own fault, along with HER, for buying him a bike she knew he rode illegally and had already had one confiscated and destroyed.
Huge issue out here in Northern CA and the Bay Area. One of my old pals died about a year ago butchering a wheelie on the interstate on his Dyna while riding in a large group. But its more of a street bike thing around here.
I guess in San Francisco, Baltimore, and some other cities, a bigger problem is unregistered bikes doing stupid things:
I'm not sure there is much direct affect on insurance rates, since most of the ones you see in videos like this are stolen and not insured.
