Ahhh, the old pink slip......

Background: worked for a start up tech company for the last seven years and when i had pulled all my hair out (completely bald by now), i decided to take a step up and take a VP BD position for a larger tech start up. (guess i got tired of being marketing, sales, customer support and just about everything else)

Today: came into the office at about 0630 mst to find a "layoff" letter in my inbox. apparently the 1.8 mil our group has coming in by 3/08 isn't enough to keep my business group alive. have spent most of the day arguing w/ creditors (letting them know it might be a rocky road ahead) and arguing w/ the wife. should let her bundle the kids up and head for her mom's house, but at our age, will be easier just to split things down the middle (including the kids ((just kidding of course. I hope)).

Just needed a place to vent as now winter is almost upon me and i don't even have that release till spring.

enjoy all and .............

PS. if any of this group is looking for a Bus Dev person in the US DOD field (techy cr@p like secure wireless data networks, ad hock infrastructure, force/security/facility protection and alerting solutions), feel free to pm me and we can go from there.

Dang, no, double dang horse hockey pucks, B2.

Out of the blue!?

Wish I could help other than to express my assurances that things will get better. They always do.

I got walked today too. 14 years at Texas Instruments, the last 12 in R&D as a Process Engineering Technician. They decided to send R&D to
Taiwan and all of us techs' jobs were eliminated. We no longer had a position in the company. 500 people in all on the street. Not as many
as some companies, but it was our whole group.

I do have a great severeance package and have a possible new position there in another group. If that doesn't work out, I have other plans. I have 3 teenagers, I needs my job!

But it seems everyone is heading to Asia. Bad for America I say...
Looks like Ireland has a wealth of jobs according to Irishjobs.com.

Been there just remember when one door closes another opens. I had 14 yrs in and the upper managment changed . I saw the hand writing now I shoe horses for a living make twice as much and became stress free if my boss fires me I yell into the mirror. Guys keep that in mind maybe there is something in the private sector to support your skills as self employed. Hopeing for the best outcome for you and Family

Sheesh, and here I was enjoying my self satisfying escape from the Cube World, and now all you guys are getting axed. Makes me feel a tad guilty and reduces my smug factor dramatically...
Wish I could start a business and hire all you tech wizzes.
All the best to you.

Man, that sucks for both of you. Funny how things work out the first day of the 4th quarter. I feel for both of you having worked in the industry for the past 20 years as an engineer. I quit a 10 year secure job with lousy pay a brownnosing boss to enter the world of godless contracting. Good money, high risk and I rely on my skills to keep me working. It can be brutal but I love having things on my own terms and I'm always learning. If I get laid off, there's no severance, just unemployment and a lot of time to whore out my motorcycle maintenance skills servicing bikes. I avoided defence for years but the first contract gig I got was doing radios for the F22 and F35 at Northrop Grumman. It sucked but they paid me well to sit on my butt for a year and a half doing remedial mechanical design. Now, I'm working for a contract design house as a PCB designer / lead engineer that does high end electronic products for the private sector. I love the work and the people I work with are great. Keep your heads up and your minds open. New and better jobs are around the corner. Hopefully, you won't have to wait till January.

That's tough B2 and BH, a real bummer when that happens, can't understand the world today, it's as if we're run by accountants.

Passing R&D to Taiwan is totally surrendering yourself, design and development is all we've got left after manufacturing going out the door. We're going to end up in the West as a set of retailing shop keepers.

As soon as I hear cruise missles are being outsourced to China I'm stepping off the planet.
