Bike Parking

When parking your motorcycle, do you pull straight in, or back in for an easy getaway?

It really depends on the slope of the parking place. Rule of thumb: park with the front wheel uphill and the sidestand on the downhill side.

On the street, I usually put the rear wheel next to the curb -- but since roads are crowned, that's just an application of the uphill rule!

I have to go along with the good Dr on this.
When I had the Ural, it didnt matter too much as it had reverse gear, but I have an aversion to trying to back a solo bike uphill.

Definitely as DrH says. Parking downhill towards the kerb with a 220kg bike would tax anyone. Should you have to do that 'bumping' it out with depression of the front forks and hold it at back-pull with the hand-brake you should be able to shunt yourself out. Best not to get into that position in the first place.

+3 to Dr H. I'll ignore a parking sign direction to park the bike facing uphill.

Russ.

Agreed guys.

I should have been clearer, but I meant in a level parking lot rather than on the street.

I always park (2 or 4 wheels), if possible, so that I can exit by going forward; that way I can see if any moron is walking or driving by with their heads tucked in their "nether regions". I was parking the car that way the other day and a fellow who was also backed in to the space next to me asked me why I did it. I told him, and he said that he was a safety instructor and he always taught people to back in, so that they could see better what was coming along when they pulled out.

Once again the wisdom of the "village idiot" speaks: Jim

My general rule (regardless of the vehicle) is "back on arrival", unless I can proceed ahead for that spot.
