a new road hazard

I've been for a 5 hour ride today to Auckland to visit some friends and blow out some cobwebs.

Came across a new (to me) hazard on the road on the way home.

On the open road and just entering an area of road works when I thought I could see something on the road ahead in the middle of my lane on a sweeping bend.I was looking in to the setting sun so visibility wasnt perfect.
I realised at the last moment it was a sheet of aluminium about 3'x3' - it was one of the temporary roadworks signs that had blown off it's holder.
I had already slowed to about 80kph and managed to get around it - but I shudder to think what would have happened if I had ridden over it while stacked over for the corner

Be careful out there

Grant

Thumbs up At least it wasn't a DUCK!

Hi Grant,
well suffice to say if you hit it whiles stacked over in a corner you would be tellling the story with lots of bruises and a bent Sprint.

Search "DUCK" in Sprint Forum.

Glad you were able to miss it friend.

...... actually Dave - I think I yelled something like 'DUCK' at the time

I'm sure I would have been sliding along the road in a shower of shattered fairings if I had hit it.

They use those dam steel plates

here all the time, and when there is dew on them when I leave at 5:45 am they are a straight up straight across steady throttle kind of thing.

I HATE METAL PLATES, and loose hubcaps laying in the road in the middle of a blind turn.

Well actually Ice, that was pretty normal, the rest of NZ thinks Auckland roads are paved with gold, but as we can't afford it the best we can do is sheet it with aluminium.

Incidentally, did you drop your $5 into the kitty box when you arrived, we need it for road maintenance. This is because they are going to charge Aucklanders' 10c per litre extra on fuel to pay for the roads we need. (That we've already been paying for with fuel tax they've used for other things).

Tbird it is kind of ironic that a sign meant to warn almost creates an accident. Good thing you were sharp.

iceman,
Good riding........
Did you stop and move the sign off the road in case the next bike rider coming along might not be as skilled as yourself?

glad you made the corner.

funny you mention that jhawk. I narrowly missed a tree in the road on my BRP trip. Heavy, heavy wind morning of the third day. crap all over the road. I was out early and I believe I was the first vehicle along. about a ten inch in diameter dead tree all the way across the road except for one wheel space on the far left. it was also in the middle of a corner. After i got by I turned around and came back and cleared the road. Started thinking how I really had to get on the binders and figured I would save someone else the racing heart at the very least and possibly a nasty spill.
