Diff. Triumph Logos?

Saw in a thread someone mention the uniqueness of new vs old "triumph" badges. Now I can't stop noticing the differences:

The "R" in "Triumph" ends in different ways either short of the "H", connected to the "H", and on some it swings up under the "H" to complete the crossbar.

What's up with this and does anyone know why it has changed? Any significance to something that's supposedly copyrighted? Is it a pre- vs post- buy-out change?

'Enquiring' minds want to know . . . .

Hinckley redesigned the logo for the initial launch in 92 - they had planned to use the Meriden style logo (as they own it) but were advised that it might prove a little hard to crack down on the copyright. So, they decided to do an update - slightly restyling the letters and decreasing the length of the swoosh. This was the logo they used until recently (and the version that this site uses). They then updated the logo once again year or two ago (can't remember the exact time) to that which you will see on the corporate site today.

I wish someone would make repops of the old emblems. I'd buy.

I think the top one is a Triumph Car Logo, I`ve seen it on the Hubcaps of a Triumph Mayflower and a few Triumph Car Clubs use it as their Logo. Maybe someone can clarify it?

No I'm afraid your a bit wrong there. That one is The motorcycle logo. The Car logo looked like this, subtly different as you see. At some point during the time this logo was used the car and bike divisions split.

That was done in 2004 for the start of the 2005 model year, though the newest logo did not appear immediately on everything coming out of Hinckley. Older style tank badges, owners' manual covers, instruments, etc., continued to be shipped until they were used up.

Moochy, as for "why," companies frequently adapt and update their logos to fit what they perceive as the style of the times. Check out any website featuring memorabilia or collectibles from companies like Coke, Pepsi, AT&T, and others that have been around for 100 years or so. Quite a lot of changes to be seen. Even Harley reworks their various logos on occasion.

In fact, it's hard to name many major companies that haven't altered their logo at some point. GE is the only one I can think of who has remained substantially unchanged, and Ford hasn't done more than minor tweaks in my lifetime. I expect not many other firms can say that.

Thanks Nick, for clarifying things. I`ve had a few Triumph cars in the past, Toledo, 2000, 1500 and Herald and the Globe logo is quite prominent in Triumph car club circles.

Mick was right about securing the ownership of the copyright of the old-style Triumph logo with the circled 'H'. Pirate copies of that logo have been used for years without challenge and could now be said to be in the public domain.

There's plenty of pirate Triumph gear wherever you go today but I've only seen the old-style logo used.

Anyone using the new-style logo illegally will be able to pursued thru the courts.

I think thats why the globe logo only found its way onto bikes for a few years. To distinguish the bike company from the car company Triumph Motorcycles adopted the more familiar logo we know. I like the globe though. Its neat.
