Volcano eruption NZ

Mt. Ruapehu had a minor eruption yesterday, one climber resting in a hut in the valley was unlucky when a rock crashed through the roof.

The photo in the link shows the lava that flowed, at the top of the picture (the blue streak) is Lake Taupo and the faint shadow beyond the lake is Taupo itself. The distance from Auckland is 280km (175 miles).

Ruapehu:

Here is a pic I took from Taupo earlier this year, Ruapehu is the snow covered mountain in the background.

A 15 minute eruption? Pfftt

Kilauea has been erupting continuously for the past 18 years.

Admittedly, the lava flow from Kilauea is pretty slow, but most things are in Hawaii.

Well we're at one end of the 'rim of fire' Wombat, and California is at the other end and you're in the middle.

If we block off our ends you are going to go more than Pffffut ! More like a cork out of a bottle !

Just to round up the report, here's a shot of the hut that was overwhelmed by the lahar, the guys inside were lucky they were not totally buried alive.

There are 5 volcano's which can be considered reasonably active in NZ, one White Island is more or less permanently active. There are a number of geothermal fields around NZ, mainly around the Rotorua area and there are hot springs where you can bathe in them only 10km from where I live.

Info on NZ volcanic activity:

http://www.virtualoceania.net/newzea...otos/volcanic/

We have a volcano Rangitoto, smack bang in the middle of our harbour in full view of the city, which has a perfect cone visible from all around Auckland, fortunately last eruption was 600 years ago.

For those who haven't read the full link, the pic above of Lake Taupo, is the world's biggest crater where the world's biggest volcanic explosion occured, over 40 times bigger than Krakatoa.

We're not called the Shaky Isles for nothing

Extra Motorcycle: nah
Mt. Ruapehu

About this time 2 yrs ago we visited my son who was working in NZ (Waihi) and we actually visited Mt. Ruapehu and did some skiing there. What an amazing place!! I went arse up a few times and feared that might have started an earth tremor...
There is NO place like NZ!! I'd love to live there.

Hans, you've committed a cardinal sin of an Aussie praising New Zealand, I'll put it down to a bout of temporary insanity and for a small fee will delete your post !
