Just to round up the report, here's a shot of the hut that was overwhelmed by the lahar, the guys inside were lucky they were not totally buried alive.
There are 5 volcano's which can be considered reasonably active in NZ, one White Island is more or less permanently active. There are a number of geothermal fields around NZ, mainly around the Rotorua area and there are hot springs where you can bathe in them only 10km from where I live.

We have a volcano Rangitoto, smack bang in the middle of our harbour in full view of the city, which has a perfect cone visible from all around Auckland, fortunately last eruption was 600 years ago.
For those who haven't read the full link, the pic above of Lake Taupo, is the world's biggest crater where the world's biggest volcanic explosion occured, over 40 times bigger than Krakatoa.
