What kind of art do you like...
We do beer and books, lots, which is fun, movies, food, music (don't get me started on the "Song Title game"...) but I don't think we've done a thread on what kind of art we enjoy. At least that I can remember.
I'm prompted to think of this because I went out for a short ride after work today, and stopped off at my local coffee shop on the way home for an iced coffee. Sitting outside, a gent walked passed saw me and my bike and said to me: "Now that is a work of art." I was flattered and we had the obligatory what year is it, didn't know they still made them, I had a 68 Bonnie, wish I never sold it...conversation. I never tire of it, which I suppose is why I hang outside of coffee shops drinking iced lattes...
But, anyway, it would be interesting to hear about folk's interests art wise.
Ok, I'll start. While I'm interested in all sorts of art, I've always had a real leaning in appreciating the color field minimalists like Rothko, Still, Newman, Stella, Mondrian, and especially Ellsworth Kelly.
Here's one of the reproduction Kelly prints I have:

Well they say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, the guys right about your bike.
Re the crossroads, a set of traffic lights would be a nice touch.

Everything since the impressionists has been a complete waste of paint. Okay, Dali was brilliant too. Here's a better explanation of my first statement than my level of art education could ever produce:
http://www.artrenewal.org/articles/P...ophy1.asp#name Warning; it's long, but you get the gist quickly.
Some of my favorites include Rubens, Raphael, Bruegel (the elder, who painted the Tower of Babel, the Return of the Herd...), and Hieronymus Bosch. Bosch was centuries ahead of his time. I'd love to have 15 or 30 minutes with him, to ask "***?"

Process Painting
I was fortunate enough to study painting under Hiram Williams at the University of Florida and especially appreciate his "process painting", an example of which I use as my avatar.
Under his tutelage, I grew to appreciate the work of DeKooning, Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Rauschenberg and other post-Impressionists.
More on Hiram's work at http://www.rgp.ufl.edu/publications/...6n2/hiram.html

I got an art degree many years ago. Had to give up pursuing a career as a painter because I just simply wasn't gifted enough to turn pro. I still paint and still look at a lot of great artists' work. Some of my recent favorites in no particular order of school or style: Chuck Close, Max Beckman, Edward Hopper, Jim Dine, Stanley Spencer, Jasper Johns, Alberto Giacometti, Gerhard Richter, Leonard Baskin, R. Crumb, Wayne Thiebaud, Hokusi, Richard Diebenkorn. All worth a look.
...But if I could have one painting of my choice, I would own and never tire of looking at "Man in a Red Turban" by Jan van Eyck. In my opinion one of the greatest masterpieces of all time.

Art For Dummys
I'll only jump in here long enough to confess my ignorance of art, and to mention to Hidesert that one of my favorite works is discussed on the ARC website - Fredrick Lord Leighton's Flaming June. My print and my small house don't pair up well, so it leans against a wall juxtaposed with Maxfield Parrish's Daybreak. Atop the wainscoting of another wall in my house is a haphazard collection of album covers and trade paperbacks, among which are such works of genius as the cover of Frank Zappa's Weasels Ripped My Flesh, and the Popular Library Edition of Ben Ames Williams' Death On Scurvy Street. Add an art-nouveau figurine or two and you've got a picture of the gallery that is my home.

Very true.
I am enthralled by anything by the greatest artist of all.....Mother Nature.
The lecturer of the photography course that I took years ago, stated: 'Photography is painting with light'.
I am also impressed with the work of the late, great Ansel Adams.
