Who cares. They are crows. They are a nuisance animal. Thats why there are no bag limits and no closed season in Alabama.

Interesting thread

Arch,
you come up with the most interesting threads. I grew up in Auckland so I had to have a read. They don't have crows in NZ as far as I know but we sure have em in Ozz. Bloody noisy things they are and big.

But I have to say they are very very clever creatures if not also thoroughly annoying! I think they might be protected here too..............like everything else except motorcyclists!

Dave`s right, no crows in NZ. They`re in New Caledonia, not New Zealand, they`re just being studied by Kiwis. All Aussies know where New Caledonia is, about 700 miles due east of Aus and about 1000 miles north of New Zealand. here`s a link for the rest of you.

Geography lesson over.

Thank you Dave. I hope you are well.

I was fascinated when I heard about the story. The video is quite good.

Problem in Muckawucka Land is Rooks. If you think back a few years I was pleading for a cure to get rid of them from the trees. As many as 300 inhabit the tree 200 yards from my abode. I have now taken to firing rockets at them - no not Triumph Rockets, too bloody big to throw 30 feet in the air!

The heavy rains we've had this year seems to have culled a few. Maybe next year I'll buy a fire engine and hose them out of the tree.

Take Care.

Rooks easy

Arch mate,
look if you want to get of Rooks you need a Queen, a Knight or a Bishop of the right colour (no I am not racist it's just the way it is when dealing with rooks).

Definitely no crows in NZ but we do have magpies which are a crow species and they are very intelligent. They know team work, a single magpie is no match for a hawk but two magpies working together can see off a hawk. I see this scenerio many times over my farm.

Magpies are also very territorial and I have a resident pair here, no good bumping them off, they would be immediately replaced by another pair. They are very cheeky and will come onto the patio and eat out of the cat dishes.

This guy who studied crows in (French) New Caledonia got $650,000 from the NZ government to do this. I don't think the government knows we don't have crows. I'm going to put in for a research grant to see if NZ kangaroos are more intelligent than Aussie kangeroos. No, we don't have them either but the government probably doesn't know that and for $650,000 I'm going to tell them.

--------------
Ride on !

Mate youse may not have Kangaroos but when I was there in the 70's there was heaps of wallabies on Kauwau Island. And Possums.
Crows are a protected species in Australia, have been since about 1980. As Kids we used to shoot them, clever **** things they can dodge a 22 bullet. Very intelligent, have a very heightened sense of danger.
