Cop Week In Alabama-Beware!

Any of you planning on going through Alabama should be aware that 200 extra State Troopers are on duty, each determined to write tickets. They are advertising "zero tolerance." That means you get stopped for dong 56 in a 55 mph zone. This blitz will last through Friday, and some friends of mine have received tickets of barely exceeding the speed limits. I have heard that tailgating and radical lane-changing are also favorites for ticketing.

Be careful.

When they do this you should organise a mass go slow ride. I've always wanted to do this

Be staggered in the lanes, like so (so they can't get you for 2 abreast)

and clog the highways going slow as a protest. Cops should be out catching real crims, not counting tickets and 10km over the speed limit of open roads.

That's ridiculous. That's much less than the accepted variation in speedometer accuracy.

This side of the atlantic we've a 10%+2 mph policy to allow for speedo inaccuracy - ie in a 30 zone you are ok up to 35mph (30+3+2 for the hard of thinking ) before you can be given a ticket. Do you guys have anything similar?

Ticketing the populous does nothing for anyone except a few government officials and the coffers of the state and it's relevant departments. This is in my humble opinion a racketeering attribute that should be unlawful - akin to the brutilisation of children by draconian teachers - something no parent can tolerate, nor should the electorate. Such police state actions, are an unwelcome assault on law abiding citizenry. Why should the state lash out on the very electorate that elected them? It seems that those who support these practices are as equally as errant as those that sanction such activities. Why do we allow within our society so predatory an action of control, when it serves not the population but only the politics of been 'seen' to control driver criminal activity and penalises generally, the law abiding citizenry? Eat the electorate, the vermin - we're all guilty anyway!

It's all about revenue, just like Iraq/Afghanistan is about oil!

I didn't know that had that many extra state troopers.

I remember back in 2000 they were very very skeleton staffed - at times with only 3 patrol cars on the midnight shift - for the whole state.

Those are called "campaigns." They bring in revenue - at the same time it promotes "safety." Even though it seems a bit absurd, there is nothing illegal about it. It's also a good way to get a lot of wanted people back to justice.

But, my father always said:

"Never argue with a street cop on the street, because he owns the street. You should only argue with a street cop in the courtroom."

Respect can go along way - well, depending on who pulls you over. Keep in mind the officer is just doing his job as he/she was told. They have the same everyday problems as everyone else - bills, mortgage a family, etc.

We have a 10km/h over the limit before a ticket which is quite good at the lower speed limits. i.e. at a limit of 50km/h you get ticketed at 61km/h and at a 100km/h at 111km/h. Except for passing schools where the over limit is 5km/h. This is the 'allowance' they publish in traffic pamphlets.

I don't think speedo accuracy allowance is taken into consideration, I think the view is if they only allowed 1 or 2 km/h over the limit drivers would be looking at their speedo more than the road ahead.

Ride on !
