Vermont roads and Vermont cops
To protect the innocent, no names here. Took the weekend and a work day as a gift to myself for a nice long ride. I have a tendency to talk too much, so I'll try to keep this short. Plan was to hook up with someone that knows the roads of Vermont. We were to meet in small town not far from the Mass border and then head north. The meet-up was perfect and we headed north, me following. Great pace. Great roads. Rt. 100. Following at a pace through twisties often a 'little' above the speed limit, I had a big smile the whole way. Slowed down at all the right places where there were small hamlets then immediately picked it up to sail through the curves. Brisk, but not stupid. Just perfect. (Not the speed limit, by the way. You'll see why I mention this in a minute.)
This goes on for nearly a couple of hours. Awesome. Then we come to a T in the road. We were to head right. It was here that the suggestion that I lead took place. So I bang a right and not wanting to slow the pace, I get on the Tiger a little.
Yep, you know it. Not 200 yards down the road! I'm flagged over! 200 yards in the lead and I'm flagged over! I lean back and throw my head back in dispair. Sh!t! Another surcharge on my insurance bill! Was this a plot? Hhhmmm? Nah, just my paranoia.
What a great guy this cop turned out to be. Granted, he spoke to me as he should have and I remained civil. Hey, I was totally caught. He does his 'check up' thing in the car and comes back to me with paperwork. Tells me I'm getting a ticket and a fine. 67 in a 40mph zone. BUT, he coded the ticket so I wouldn't get a surcharge. Totally cool. Totally a good, understanding guy. I asked if a hug was in order and he said, 'no, I'm fine', so we just shook hands.
Slow ride after that (for awhile). Vermont roads beg to be ridden.

Did a similar thing a while back, was going to London for the ACE Triumph day, riding with the pack, anyway one cup of tea too many needed to pee, so not to slow the group up, I went off in front on the A! meaning to get a lead stop and rejoin the back, got a couple of miles up the road came round a bend straight into a police radar trap 70 in a 50, worried for a couple of weeks but nothing happened so I got away with it, but worrying for awhile.

Hey, Whisperinsmith. You recently suggested that we should get together for a ride. However, if you keep on attracting paperwork, I don't know.....

One of my favorite roads, rte 100........connect to 125 to 17 and I'm in heaven.
I heard that the locals and some State versions have been
patrolling rte 17 looking for people exceeding the speed limit.
And another thing, any timne I've ridden in Vermont, either in a group
or alone, the locals pull over, and wave you by !!!
I love Vermont

I know what you mean about just taking over the lead and running immediately into a speed trap, I sweated out a potential ticket just recently when obviously well over and passed an oncoming cop car, mustn't have got my plate.
Just got back from a ride an hour ago, and was saved from getting another, my mate and I were mapping out a club run on our TB's and doing a time trial, on an 80km/h road in the country towards our high security prison. There was a parked unmarked red panel van with a speed camera inside. Not sure why the road is only marked 80 because this quiet country road lends itself to the maximum speed limit. However might be trying to catch crims visited their mates.
We would normally be well over the 80 on such a road, but because we were timing the run for a group of vintage bikes we kept our speed down to 80. Phew, lucky, but a strange place to have a trap.

Ride on !

that spot where mr smith got nabbed is on vt rt 4, less than 1/4 mile past the intersection with 100a in bridgewater corners (incidently less than a mile past the long trail brewery that has a nice little restaurant) . chatted with some harley guys that i know up that way and i guess that sherriff is there all year long. sooooo...if anyone is up that way, be careful.

BOOBS are a wonderful thing... you have a VT license as well, no?
Now change the variables of that story to 36 year old guy from NH doing the exact same thing and you have Mr. Dick head cop going Nazi on me like I just ran over one of his unborn kids....
Still not sold on the VT - we love everyone motto, not buyn it at all....
I do hear RT100 is a great road but wont go up there for fear of nazi imprisonment....
