Bonniegirl, Bennington & Lucinda Williams

Just to share with you what this forum can add to a life, I'll tell you about a short trip I just took. I took a couple of days off from work and headed out on my new Tiger. No real direction, but in the back of my mind I remember asking Bonniegirl (Robin, for those in the know) awhile back about Bennington, Vermont. Figured it was the perfect distance made for a short two or three day trip. So after a couple of hours on the road heading in that general direction, I plugged the crossroads of Rt. 9 & 7, Bennington into my GPS and twisted the throttle. Mesmerized where Rt 2 is slab, I missed looking at the GPS and headed in totally the wrong direction. So much for modern technology and an old geezer. What a treat it turned out to be when I realized it and found myself on some great back roads. (By the way, the new Tiger handles dirt roads just fine. And there really are lots of cows in Vermont.)

Long story short, I ended up in Bennington mid-afternoon and parked the Tiger in a central lot. It's the type of city where you know you can leave your bike and it's safe and all your luggage will be there when you return.

I took a short walk and found myself in front of South Street Cafe. Opened the door and entered what turned out to be the most comfortable, cozy and inviting cafe. Yep, Lucinda Williams was constant background music. If you didn't like Lucinda before you entered, you will when you leave this cafe. Everything in it grows on you, from Robin to Gennivieve (spelling?) to Lucinda in the background.

I walked up to the counter and an awesome young woman with appropriate ink on her arms and some more visible on her legs, waited on me. I asked if there was a Robin working there. She said she was Robin. I then asked, Bonniegirl? - and added I'm Whisperinsmith.

That's all it took. She is the real deal. Just what you'd hope someone on this forum proves to be. Helpful beyond expectations, fun, pretty, great wit. I did say pretty, didn't I? (I hate being old!) And I found out, she owns the cafe! What a job she's done with it. Looking around I noticed everyone in there was totally at home and didn't seem to want to leave.

Great pastery to boot which she bakes personnally each morning!!! Amazing person.

Again, long story short. We made arrangements to meet for dinner near a B&B that she had found for me. I was just walking up to the restaurant to meet her at the agreed upon time, when I heard the sweetest Bonnieville pipes. Up rides Robin on her black Bonnie with its Thruxton like seat and straight handlebars. But the best part was Bonniegirl. Decked out in riding gear, she just fit on that bike and she can handle it too!

Robin, thanks for a being a great dinner date and for your conversation.

For all those travelling southern Vermont, don't miss South Street Cafe. Stop in and listen for those Lucinda tunes and have a great cup of coffee and awesome pastry.

Thanks Triumphrat forum for making those couple of days possible for me.

PS I'm leaving out so much, you'll just have to get to know her yourself. Stop by.

Great Story - there have been a lot of negative comments about finding riding partners here lately ( too many squids and idiot riders riding above their abilities to be safe ) it is good to hear about finding a riding buddy and having a great time.

She had dinner with you on the spur of the moment? You must have made a very favorable impression on her Whisperin. Thanks for sharing your adventure. You obviously had a great time.

Yep, Robin's great. She's in my RAT pack -- terrific person and a lot of fun to ride with. She's at the other end of the state though, so I haven't made it down to check out her cafe yet. Will have to do so soon!

By the way, I've ridden with several triumphrat.net folks, and they've all been very cool.

Thanks to all who attended!

Do you keep one bullet left for yourself, for when it's all over and done?

Nice tale WSmith. Vermont is in deed a beautiful place. Lucinda Williams oh yeah that must have been the perfect music for the scene you walked into. Great music. It's good to have positive stories here. Thanks

Mark,
Your name and Ton-up (Tito) came up often in conversation. She had nothing but positive things to say about you guys. A couple of hours down Rt. 7 and you're there. Ask her about the new brownies.

Really great story Whisper and nicely told.

I like the bit:

"Bonniegirl? " - "I'm Whisperinsmith."

Shades of Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 !

Ride on !
