Check your hotels for bike parking!
I went to a bachelor party recently and we were all meeting up at a hotel in downtown Los Angeles. I followed the groom and best man to the hotel and once i got there found out they don't let bikes park there. Not even guests!
I ended up having to park my bike in a lot 5 blocks away where the attendant was very adamant that no one was going to be there to watch it after 7pm. :???:
So, be sure that the hotel you make reservations at has bike parking. Especially at higher end, metropolitan hotels with only valet parking.
I may end up swinging back by the hotel, and a few others, the next time i'm downtown. The valets were looking at me like i was from another planet. They really had no idea what to do with me. It was kinda funny.
Maybe if i hit all the downtown hotels every month or so, they'll think there's a need for bike parking and do something about it.
:-D

We don't have that problem around here yet, but your idea is a good one.

on trips like that I carry a 30' steel cable and padlock in my bags. I try to park under an awning or something and near a column so the bike is covered and I can lock it to the pole.

Hey Chisel, you have a great idea for a Rat Raid. Station poker run stops just around the corner from 10 or 12 of the downtown hotels. Make it a requirement for each participant to stop and ask if the hotel has bike parking. When the negative reply is given, say, "Sorry, we'll stay somewhere else." Then pick up your poker card and go to the next stop.
Heck, that's better than a class-action discrimination suit.

Hi Chisel - My experience at the hotels around LAX is exactly the opposite. They were very helpful in trying to find an appropriate place. No one turned me away, and some let me park free. I've parked at the Hilton, the Marriott, the Radisson, and a couple I can't remember off hand. Maybe you were just talking to the wrong person. I'd write them a polite letter and see what happens.
Regards,
Mark G

I like motels, you can bring the bike in the room with you if you want.

The general attitude around here (hotels and paid parking areas) is that if you are not taking up a parking space, you can park for free.
There are lots of areas (corners etc) in a parking structure where a bike can be parked and not be taking up space.
