In an earlier post is mentioned that I have been riding my Speedmaster for a litttle more than 2 years, and other bikes before it. All of them had four or five gears. About 10 days ago, I lucked up on a 02 Trophy wih only 400 miles, bought it and have been riding it as much as possible.

The Trophy has six forward gears, and for highway riding it is a dream. 3,000 rpms equals 62 mph, and it red-lines at 9500 rpms. You really have to watch your speed if you want to avoid a ticket. The sixth gear almost adds a new dimension for touring.

I put a larger front sprocket on my Speedy, and that helped a lot, but a sixth gear would have removed that necessity.

Why hasn't Triumph added that extra gear, or does someone know of some reason the could/should not?

Interesting question.
As it was once explained to me and as I understand it (I could be wrong in my assumption), increasing the ratios from 4 to 5 gears in a transmission, most of the bits are there to add the extra 6th gear anyway.
So the number of ratios could be economically done in multiples of 2.
Maybe things are different with modern transmissions?

There may not be room enough for a sixth set of gears, but more importantly to the bean counters, is that every set of gears costs money. My gripe is that on an engine like the Bonny, you could easily have a lower 1st, and a overdrive 5th. I can run at highway speeds in 3,4,and 5. 5 is undrive 1.07, the same 2 gears would also give .94 if reversed. Anyone want to start a searching tooth gear thread?

+1 to what wombat said ,
tec told me every thing is there for 6th, but not enough space to make it reliable.

So with a small redesign of the casings, which god knows was done enough times on the triples, they could probably slip the 6 speed tranny from the triple line into the twins.

Put it this way in top gear (already with a bigger front sprocket) I am at redline at 115 mph without even on full throttle. Just about says it all!

With the modifications done to my engine it is more than capable of doing 125 given the proper ratio's
