It turns out the stepper motor was not working correctly which allowed the bike to die at red lights and feel low on power when getting off and back on the gas. Yes that does mean I knew it was low on power because I couldn't get the front end to come up like it used to.

The gas smell in the garage did not come back last night so that may have been related to the same thing in some way.

She felt really good yesterday and this morning so maybe it's for real this time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The service guy told me the stepper motor is a motor(I believe it's electric) that spins the engine when you get off the throttle to keep the motor from dying before the idle picks up. He said "the stepper motor was coming in late". This allowed the bike to die when I got off the throttle coming to a red light and made it seem like I had no power when getting off the throttle and back on again quickly.

I never heard of it before either. Next time I take the plastic off I will have to have a look.

stepper motor!!!! sniff sniff what can I smell?

Sorry. Glad the bikes fixed but i've never heard of a stepper motor. Either its bull or its part of the EFI system. (not very familiar with EFI)

I know it's real. I've looked up several related items on the internet. I think you may be right about it being part of the EFI. I know it was a computer adjustment they made to correct the problem.

He may have tried to simplify the terminology so I could understand it. The following is from a write up on the 955 sprint.

With a displacement advantage of 174cc over the VFR, the torquey triple has more low and midrange power. Unfortunately, it give up a full 9.5 hp on top to the Viffer, though acceleration is similar, due to the increased torque. Response from idle is better than ever, too. Triumph attributes this to newly revised throttle bodies, with butterflies at 5° instead of the previous 12°, a new stepper motor-controlled air bypass system for low-speed control and a bigger airbox borrowed from the new Daytona. It also tapped some British airflow experts at Lotus for help with cylinder head porting. All in all, it provides the rider with an exciting blend of low down grunt and midrange muscle.

sounds like it controls the air/fuel flow?
