Coming home last night on the new tiger after dinner with the GF, doing 65 on Interstate 5. Have to get over two lanes for the exit, doing the usual check yer six....just as I'm coming over into the slow lane, fairly close to the car in front....
There's a large white trash bag, maybe 1 1/2 foot high and it's Right There...just manage to hit it off center to the right.
Front tire takes a big hit, instantly deflates, the bag (and whatever really hard thing that's in it) spins around and takes out, first the bottom fairing, tears a hole in the bottom water hose....comes up and tears off the side stand and completely shears off the shift lever....comes back underneath the swing arm and unloads the rear end.
Huge tank slapper exacerbated by coolant coating the rear tire...manage to save it and get it pulled over and slooowwwllly apply the rear brake. after getting stopped I get that real bad pain in the toes...it's broken dude, you know it. The bag must have come up and hit that left foot real hard and broke my toe's.
I violated a basic rule that I had for years...ride with substantial footwear. I usually use Bates Fast Lane boots, the sole and toe area are pretty hard, but I went and bought a pair of BMW riding boots/sneakers. Pretty cool looking but real soft. Going to have to bin them....
Earlier in the day I had been looking at a pair of Daytona boots, hows that for a cosmic sign....
Don't know about the Tiger yet. Ain't gonna be cheap, the sidestand bracket mounts directly to bosses on the case and all the bosses are gone. Front wheel and tire, shift lever assembly, hose.....
I was doing really well rehabing my left leg after breaking it and hyper-extending the tendon and ligaments in my knee after a get-off four months ago...now I've got bad toes on the same side...blardy hell...

I was trying to come up with something that summed up my thoughts, but stevent's "Sweet Christ on Crutches" says it all.
Wow, you really are lucky to be typing here. Good save! Real sorry to hear about your new Tiger and your toes.
Wow again. Dam* stuff comes out of nowhere.

Glad to hear that it wasn't alot worse.
Obviously experience pays off.
Toes will heal in time, this is something that I know from experience, but,

Glad to hear you came out Ok. Too bad you weren't on the DR. It'd been just another day on the trail. =P
I take it you never found out what was in the bag? It must have been something pretty bad. I imagine some cars got banged up pretty good, too. Especially when they had to dodge kickstands and shift levers, too! :-D
I had close call making a lane change about 8 months ago. Ever since then i now get my head turned back around before moving over. I'm thinking that it'll help me hold a straight line if i look off to the side, too. I really don't want to be one of those guys who's looking at something really cool on my left and drift in to oncoming traffic because that's the way i'm looking.
Hrmm, maybe you should get both feet cast up. Then you don't need boots.

In the words of Yosmite Sam;
"Great horny toads!"
Sheesh Noch, you're giving us quite a fright lately.
Get well.

Glad to hear you're okay (for the most part) Noch.
Hope that toe heels up quick.

Good save Nochi', you're lucky and unlucky to hit something like that on a highway. Sounds like you hit a bag of bricks.
Even with good boots they would have taken a big knock, something to knock of the side-stand is a huge impact. A car hitting that full on would have been smashed up too.
Pity about a new bike like that, get yourself and it fixed.
Good luck

Like everyone else I'm glad you're OK. Good job keeping a cool head and keeping it under control. As for the bike, call your insurance agent. Collision coverage should pay for everything less your deductible.
Good luck.
